Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School, as we know it today, was founded in 1924 as an elementary school and opened its high school division in 1946, graduating its first class in 1950. However, the first Catholic education of St. Thomas was organized in 1860 by a Belgian Redemptorist priest, Fr. De Buggenoms. Small schools were scattered throughout Charlotte Amalie. Instruction was done by lay people when the Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny arrived in 1866 to teach and staff the Catholic hospitals. In succeeding years, Catholic education was staffed by many missionary orders, including in 1922, the Sisters of the Sacred Heart Jesus and Mary, 1926 the Sisters of the Most Holy Trinity and 1933 the Sisters of Charity of St. Elizabeth. The latter order, Sisters of Charity of St. Elizabeth, remained at the school for 77 years until the last sister left in June 2010.
In 1924 Bishop Philip Schelfaut granted the Sisters of the Sacred Heart permission to build a new school. It was completed on January 1, 1926. The new school was dedicated in honor of Sts. Peter and Paul. In 1946, the high school was started and by 1954 a two story high school was completed. A third story was added in 1966.
Under the direction of the Redemptorist Fathers and the Sisters of Charity of St. Elizabeth, along with lay staff and volunteers Sts. Peter and Paul school thrived to where it became the premier school of choice on St. Thomas for several decades. The Redemptorists labored hard to provide a century of education by maintaining the facilities we have today. The Redemptorist influence ceased in 1989 when the church was appointed a Diocesan pastor and the school became a Diocesan school. It was also at this time that many of the remaining Sisters of Charity left and the school was then staffed primarily by lay personnel. The replacement of the religious personnel with lay persons significantly affected the school's budget as did numerous windstorms in the 1980's and '90's. Over the past 20 years, Sts. Peter and Paul suffered much damage from hurricanes, particularly Hurricanes Hugo ( 1989) and Marilyn ( 1996) both of which adversely affected the facilities and enrollment.
The administrators, faculty and staff of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic School have done an admirable job in keeping the school afloat over the past 84 years. These women and men deserve many kudos. They have taken the proverbial two loaves and 5 fishes given to them and worked wonders, such that at the start of the 21st century our enrollment is once again on the increase, the curriculum has been revitalized and the facilities are being upgraded annually. Our new strategic plan reaffirms our Catholic identity, re-commits our intention to remain within the center of the community as a beacon of hope and is positioning us well for the fulfillment of our mission. With His guidance and with the support of our clergy, benefactors, parents, friends and other stakeholders, we will achieve our mission for the benefit of the young people with whose care we are entrusted.
