Arminius Stroup

Birth: 12JAN1834, Dodson township, Highland County, Ohio

Death: 23AUG1923

Father:  Clayburn Stroup

Mother:  Mary Stroup

Alternate spelling:  Armenius, Arminius, Armenions.  It was not unusual for German Catholics to take a latin first name after baptism.  Arminius is latin for the german name, “Hermann”.

First Wife

Spouse: Julie/Julia Ann Stodgel/Stodghill

Birth: abt 1839, Ohio

Death: abt 1860-62

Marriage: 11SEP1856, Highland County, Ohio (Arminous)

Children: Sylvester Frank(lin), b. abt DEC 1857; d. 31JAN1942

Death date reflects Arminius marrying his second wife, below.  I have no record saying that she died in 1860-62; in fact, they could have divorced.

Second Wife:

Spouse:Cynthelia Ohio Shafer

Birth:  abt 1841/2

Death: abt 1934

Marriage: 11MAR1862, Highland County, Ohio (Armenous)

I believe this marriage to be valid (see notes under the sources).  Cynthelia and Arminius may be buried together in the Stroup Cemetery (see note below).

And, their children:

Ella M. "Ellie", b. 1862/3
Margaret J., b. 1864/5
Anna B., b. 1866/7
William Alfred, b. 1868/9
Perania, b. 1871/2
Alice, b. 1875/6

Birth dates based upon Census data.  NOTE:  since Census data was pretty clear once found, i have had no reason to add LDS family search information; for completion, i will eventually come back and add it below.

7.  1890 Census:  destroyed in a fire.

8.  1900 - 1920 Census:  have searched Ancestry.com using several variations of Armenius, but found nothing.  I have also tried searching on the children's names, but nothing.  In the 1900 Census, i have viewed every image for Salem and Dodson Townships, Highland County, Ohio but found nothing.  This will probably end up being an open research question.

9.  Ohio Department of Health.  State of Ohio Death Index (online at Ancestry.com, as Ohio Deaths, 1908-1932, 1938-1944, and 1958-2002; image 3822 of 6718):  Entry is, Anenias Stroup, 24AUG1923, Highland County.  See attached image at the bottom of this page.

10.  McBride, David Newton. 1962. Marriage Records of Highland County, Ohio, 1805-1880.  OH:  Edwards Letter Shop.
Arminius appears to have had two marriages:  As "Arminous" to Julia Ann Stodgel (11SEP1856), and as "Armenous" to Cynthelia Ohio Shafer (11MAR1862).

11.  McBride, David Newton. 1972 (or. Pub. 1954).  Cemetery Inscriptions of Highland County, Ohio.
According to this reference work, there is a single stone, in the Stroup Cemetery, with two inscriptions, one for an "A.R. 1834-1923", and the other part of the stone is inscribed "Cynthelia 1842-1934".  It is in the general area of other Stroup burials.  It is possible that A.R. is short for Arminius (or, rather that is what he was called since not very many people could spell his name correctly) and the dates match him, and the dates for Cynthelia's tombstone matches her.
