The Old Monastery -- Stroud

Near the Franciscan Hermitage in Stroud is the Old Monastery. This was built 1978-1980 for a group of Poor Clare Sisters from the Anglican Community of Saint Clare. It is constructed a series of beautiful mud brick buildings, centred around the Chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In 1997 a building was erected for larger gatherings, and was named the Gunya Chiara, meaning House of Light or House of Saint Clare. Sadly, by March 2000 the Sisters of Saint Clare decided they could no longer maintain community life in Stroud and subsequently the Trustees of the site have licensed the Friends of the Monastery Stroud to operate the Old Monastery and Gunya Chiara for use as a gathering place for workshops, retreats and other similar programmes.

The Friends of the Monastery is aware that the Monastery and the Gunya Chiara have a history of prayerful reflection and wish to retain the reflective ambiance of the site. The Chapel, particularly, is a dedicated Christian place of worship and all who use it are asked to respect its dedication.
