What is World Youth Day?
World Youth Day is a youth-oriented Roman Catholic Church event. While the event itself celebrates the Catholic faith, invitation to attend is non-denominational. World Youth Day (or in short 'WYD') was initiated by Pope John Paul II in 1986. It is celebrated on a diocesan level annually, and at a week-long international level every two to three years at different locations. The international level events attract hundreds of thousands of youth from almost every country on the planet.

"Father Ron Witherup lives in Paris and leads the congregation of the Society of San Sulpice (Sulpicians) who taught me theology when I was studying to become a priest. He indicates that he would like to have us at St. Sulpice Church. Arrive Paris, check into lodging, walk the ancient center of Paris visiting Notre Dame, Ste. Chapelle, the Holocaust Memorial, evening at the Basilica of the Sacre Couer |

Pray at the shrine of the Miraculous Medal, witness the incorrupt body of St. Catherine Laboure, walk through the catacombs of Paris, evening at the Eiffel Tower |

August 13th |
Morning train or bus to Lourdes, Visit the triple basilica of Lourdes and the Grotto of Our Lady, pray the Stations of the Cross with the spirit of St. Bernadette, evening candle light procession in honor of Our Lady |

August 14th |
Bathe in the sacred waters of Lourdes, pray in the Grotto where Mary appeared, spend time with our Lord in Adoration, walk in the footsteps of St. Bernadette |

August 15th |
Begin the journey to Madrid, stopping Zaragoza to spend some time in prayer at the Basilica del Pilar |

August 16th |
World Youth Day begins this afternoon with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass |
