The census should record people present at each dwelling at midnight at the end of the stated day.  In later years this also included people, ie night time workers, who returned to the dwelling the following morning, and who had not been counted elsewhere.
 
The 1941 census didn't take place due to the war although a census was taken on Friday 29 September 1939 in order to issue National Identity Cards.
