Street Youth Ministry offers service projects and hand-on learning experiences to civic and church groups. We have carefully formulated our service projects to be valuable to the street community as well as those who come to serve. Because we also need individual volunteers and because our great service projects do require lots of our energy to provide, there is a requirement for a group of 20 to provide us with 20 future individual volunteer hours. For groups that cannot do this, we offer an honorarium alternative for groups that do not meet the follow-up volunteer requirement. The honorarium alternative $10 per person. In order to make sure the event is not too large a drain on the limited resources of our missionary, we ask that each group that interacts with our clients to provide future volunteer hours at our regular events. All these things together make sure that the service day is helpful, healthy, and long-term sustainable for everyone. We currently have several service projects that can be scheduled by using our Service Project Request form to begin the sign-up process. The minimum group size is, respectfully, 20 persons. If you aren't that big, we encourage you to invite other. Use the form even if you are small, and we'll alert you when we have events you can join. Wash Day: This event is great for groups of all ages. Participants will gather supplies needed to do laundry for street youth in the West Campus Austin area. While laundry is being done, hospitality and fresh clothes are offered. The group received an overview of SYM and street youth prior to beginning the project. Families are welcome. Drag Clean-up Day: This service project put street youth and volunteers side by side in a safe an enlightening atmosphere to accomplish a cleaning-up of the West Campus area of Austin. Participants will gather tools and supplies in advance and prepare a fellowship meal (sandwiches, pizza, chilli, etc.) for sharing after the work is over. The group receives instructions prior to work and has time to share what has been learned throughout the day. There must be at least one adult per student under the age of 16. Families with older kids are welcome. Manna Bags: Our clients love getting bags of goodies from individuals. By putting some of the right things in the bag, your group can show that they understand street life and care. We can instruct your group on the things we recommend. After your group assembles the bags and includes hand written notes or drawings, you can optionally visit our service area and pass out the bags. Lunch Bags: Our clients are very grateful for a bag lunch, either to eat right away or to take with them for later when food isn't available. We can instruct your group on the things we recommend for the lunch bags. After your group assembles the bags and includes hand written notes or drawings, you can optionally visit our service area and pass out the bags. |
