What We Do‎ > ‎

Street Outreach

Each Friday, SYM takes to the streets with food and other needs from 4 to 6pm. We cover the twelve blocks immediately west of the UT Campus, along the DRAG and San Antonio street.

Our intention is to greet anyone new in the area and to provide some critically needed outreach services. We carry a meal (sandwiches, salty snack, and sweet snack) and water with us. We give out donated clothing, toiletries as available. We provide donated dog food and pet accessories. We let dog owners know of a vet who will treat their dogs for free. We provide a welcome to Austin packet for those new to the streets of Austin (to help them access services and to know the local law regarding vagrancy), and we provide Bibles and study guides for those interested.

In addition, Terry does follow-up interviews with existing clients. He provides brief counseling as needed on general topics, sex, substance abuse, employment, and schooling. Terry and volunteers share their love of Jesus as opportunities present.

Visitors are welcome on outreach, although they need to sign-up in advance. Helpers describe this as a 2 hours mini-mission trip. Training material is provided before helpers arrive and Terry provides on-the-job training as you walk the streets.

Weekly food volunteers and outreach helpers are needed and can sign-up using our CareCalenda. Donations to cover ongoing costs when food volunteers aren't available are needed. You can donate online. Individually packaged snack, candy, and breakfast bar items are needed. We take donations of tee-shirts, underwear, washclothes, and toiletires for our outreach. These can be dropped off at any of our sites.
