Brief report from Joe Navidad, Executive Director of People's CORE, based in Los Angeles, CA:
On January 13, 2012, four Moro People's CORE personnel, a non-profit organization from Kabacan, North Cotabato, traveled for seven hours to Cagayan de Oro City, and distributed cash assistance to numerous families affected by Typhoon Sendong. Locally organized by two of the survivors themselves, Gigi and Jerry Boy, they reached out to other survivors and organized a very orderly distribution in a makeshift "center" in Barangay Consolacion, District 2.
The Sagip Tulong sa Pilipinas (STP) is a modest campaign support for the victims of Typhoon Sendong organized by some Filipino American organizations based in the US. The financial assistance was coursed through its sister organization in North Cotabato, the Moro People's CORE, which took charge in the distribution of cash directly to the typhoon survivors.
I would like to personally thank the hardworking Moro P-CORE personnel for their humble share in the STP campaign. Sarrah, a member of the Board, took off from her job to be with the Moro People's CORE staff in CDO. Faridah, a volunteer Communication Development staff and a very unassuming teacher, also got a couple of days' absence from her work. Ayesha, a volunteer Program Assistant, took off from her regular classes to help in CDO. She is also the "official" photographer of Moro People's CORE. And, of course, Zaynab, the ever energetic Executive Director of Moro P-CORE, who organized and coordinated the STP campaign from North Cotabato to Cagayan de Oro City. May your tribe increase!
I also would like to acknowledge the typhoon survivor-volunteers for their concerted effort in organizing the STP operations in Cagayan de Oro City; Gigi and hubby Nino, Jerry Boy and his crew, and other community volunteers who also acted as rescuers during the height of the typhoon and, up to now, are lending their hands in whatever post typhoon activities that they are able to do.

The people of Northern Mindanao demand justice, & they need your help. Make a much-needed donation to Sagip-Tulong sa Pilipinas (STP) now. Help us raise another $2000 by Monday, January 16.
On Dec 27, 2011, Typhoon Sendong ravaged through Northern Mindanao:
More than 1,400 killed
376,000 displaced
55,000 in evacuation centers
8 cities in 13 provinces affected
12,000 houses damaged &
29,000 partially damaged
Agricultural lands, schools, roads, & bridges destroyed
Typhoon Sendong is primarily a result of corporate greed and a government that does not work for the basic needs of the poor Filipinos in the homeland.
While Sagip-Tulong sa Pilipinas (STP) vigorously works to raise funds for the survivors of Typhoon Sendong, we hold the Philippine government directly accountable for this catastrophe.
Justice for the victims of Typhoon Sendong!
Stop corporate mining in the Philippines!
Junk the Mining Act of 1995 and the Mining Revitalization Program! |

On Dec 17, Typhoon Sendong flooded eight cities in 13 provinces in Northern Mindanao, Philippines. Dubbed as a "tsunami from the upland", it killed at least 1,400 Filipinos, displacing hundreds of thousands, and destroying farmlands, schools, roads, and bridges.
While Typhoon Sendong was ravaging Northern Mindanao, Philippine Pres. Noynoy Aquino was partying in Malacanang. The insensitivity & callousness did not stop there.
The Philippine government blamed the victims for their tragic fate because they chose to stay rather than leave. But, Mr. President, where will those 376,000 poor people go? And has the government provided basic needs for evacuation, especially for the children and the elderly? Phil. Pres. Aquino should be held directly accountable for the unimaginable scale of death & destruction made by Typhoon Sendong.
According to MAKABAYAN Spokeswoman Liza Maza, “Sendong death toll is more than enough reason for the Aquino government to junk the Mining Act of 1995 and the Mining Revitalization Program… Noynoy Aquino even exempted mining companies from the existing total log ban this year. In Northeast Mindanao alone, there are 54 existing Mineral Production Sharing Agreements (MPSA) covering 125,670 hectares and there are 36 more applications for an additional 91,429 hectares as of June, 2011."
Mining and logging accounted for the contamination of potable water sources, poisoning of the air and soil, heavy siltation of coastlines and rivers, degradation of fishing grounds, destruction of habitats and decrease in biodiversity, and other long-term impact on the human and ecological environment in the Philippines.
Typhoon Sendong is primarily a result of corporate greed and a government that does not work for even the basic needs of the poor Filipinos in the homeland.
While Sagip-Tulong sa Pilipinas (STP) Emergency Relief Fund Campaign vigorously works to raise funds for the survivors of Typhoon Sendong, we hold the Philippine government directly accountable for this catastrophe.
