Christening

‘Christening’ is an old fashioned word that refers to the giving of a Christian name. The church uses the word 'baptism’ for this special service. The child or adult is marked with the sign of a cross and is baptised with water at the font. At baptism the candidate is accepted into the family of the church. Godparents need to be baptised themselves.

Baptisms take place in a Sunday service or on certain Sundays at 12 noon.

There is no fee for baptism but there is a retiring collection for the upkeep of the building.

Welcome and Thanksgiving

Many parents want to give thanks to God for the safe arrival of a baby, to welcome and to name him or her in the company of friends and family. The welcome and thanksgiving service does exactly that and parents are encouraged to include their own ideas for the service. There are no promises made by parents or godparents in this service but it is possible to include a role for those who are to be ‘special friends’ for your child.

The usual time for this service is 12 noon on a Sunday but an alternative time can be arranged.

If you wish to sing at the service there is a cost for the organist. We ask for a donation to the church, bearing in mind that the cost for a Welcome Ceremony by a registrar in a venue on a Sunday is £220.
