Let’s review. We know that
we are all God’s stewards and we have a job to do. Giving money to the church and its missions is a big part of
stewardship, but not the only thing we are responsible for. We also need to get out there with our
time and talents and serve our God and mankind. We may not feel that we are equipped to do something, but
the Holy Spirit is active among us and is changing us each day to be people of
God. Peter was inspired in Acts 2 to deliver a powerful sermon.
“Those
who accepted his message were baptized, and three thousand were added to their
number that day” (verse 41).
Look at Abraham and Moses, just to name
a few, who were given wondrous gifts to do such extraordinary things. At our Iowa District East Lutheran Women’s Missionary League convention
in June, we were called to “Go, Gather, and Glorify!” Isn’t that our mission,
too? We can no longer sit back and
wait and think that the church, pastor, or the elders should do something about
this and that, about our dwindling church and Sunday school attendance, about our
lack of new and returning members, and our empty places on church boards and
circles. We all have to do our
part. You can’t have God without the “go” and God has commanded us to go and
get busy with the work of the Lord.
This fall, many of our current board
members will be ending their terms and I’m one of them. Our church needs new workers with new
ideas, people to work on stewardship, evangelism, public relations, church
properties, parish fellowship, and education. Everyone in our church should be
involved in something. The commitment can be large or small. The point is we
would all be doing something to keep our church alive and thriving. Are we ready to become the stewards
that God has called us to be? When our feet hit the floor each morning, let us
be the kind of stewards where the devil says, “Oh, Hell.”
