On Ash Wednesday we begin our journey through Lent, through our Lord’s Passion,
and on to Easter. It is a time of reflection and repentance, once employed by the
Church as the time for instruction for people entering the Church through Holy Baptism
on Easter Eve. During this Lenten season, we consider our sinful condition, for although
God has forgiven all our sins, we “daily sin much and surely deserve nothing but
punishment.” (Small Catechism, Meaning to the Fifth Petition).
