Current News: September 15, 2011:
Our Garden Partners celebrated the harvest from our labors with a potluck luncheon this past Saturday. We especially enjoyed the dishes that included the produce from our gardens ( including a pasta salad, a large green salad, and a delicious appetizer). Thank you to Karen Hall and Steve Tapper for grilling for us!
Now, we are beginning to wind down the season. We have work to do to clean up the plots, but as you can see by the pictures, we are still producing at this time. including eggplants, tomatoes, peppers, and squash. And the marigolds are happily blooming away!
This has been a season that brought special challenges. The several days of rain (ending with Irene's visit) did effect our crops (causing tomato blight in many gardens and knocking down almost matured corn stalks), and the wasps took over one of the compost bins! But, this did this not discourage our garden partners. This was highlighted both in conversation and survey.
As one gardener stated, "I now appreciate what farmers have to face in terms of pests and weather conditions!"
Here are a couple other comments from particpants:
One father reports, "(My daughter) and mother had a wonderful time in the gardening project. (My daughter) enjoyed having fried green tomatoes and growing her watermelon. She enjoyed sharing her veggies with others and I am so happy she participated."
Another parent wrote, " It was a great first experience for myself and my family. We have learned alot for the next spring."
