The goal of this course is
to facilitate a new understanding of the phenomena & processes
of life, health & evolution at personal & planetary
scales using key ideas from systems sciences to promote a paradigm shift in
human thinking; a new cultural map.
- Autopoiesis
: Key to an answer to, “What is life?”, it distinguishes living
self-organizing systems – like cells & organisms – from
nonliving ones; metabolism as autopoiesis; energy gradients;
self-organization & emergence
- Symbiosis: Species
living in close physical contact; symbiogenesis: a necessary
component of evolution above bacterial level; examples : eukaryotic
(nucleated) cell evolution; insects; green animals; lichens
- Organisms
: Homeostasis
(self-regulation) as an emergent
property of autopoietic systems; health as a state on the edge of chaos; healing as emergence;
homeostatic systems: respiratory, circulatory; nervous, immune,
digestive, excretory ...
- Gaia : Planetary metabolism
& homeostasis; 4-billion

Gaia 4 : Animate Earth : Science, Intuition & Gaia
This course is an
intellectual excursion into the science of Gaia theory that honors
intuition, sensing
& feeling as well as rational thinking, a reading seminar punctuated by lectures based on the book of that title by Stephan Harding, the
most thorough, accessible, thought-provoking book yet written about Gaia
