The Research Behind the Story Map:

Transferring Theory into Practice

by Andrea Lowery

  • Isabel Beck and Margaret Mckeown developed the "notion of the story map" in the early eighties.

  • Creating a story map requires formulating questions about the story that develop plot points (both explicit and implied).

  • It is an understanding of sequential central events in the story and the causal relationships between those events.  For there to be augmented comprehension, the framework of the story map must be established before the other elements and details of the story are brought to light.

  • Although the research was conducted with third grade children, it appears that this strategy can be applied to any reader.  (Age does not seem to be relevant.)

  • The study centered around questions that guide the comprehension of children during silent reading units (SRUs).  Originally intended to improve comprehension of basal readers.  It works best with narrative stories.
