Ames Public Library
Has a special Iowa section which includes the genealogy collection.
Has city directories for Ames and Story County. Provides access to
HeritageQuest Online and Persi. Also has a subscription to Family Tree Magazine. The Ames Public Library has a complete set of city directories from 1950 and some earlier years. There is a complete set of Ames telephone directories. and local newspapers are available on microfilm. (Later issues have been indexed.) You'll also find a set of yearbooks from Ames High School. The Ames Public Library is also home to the Farwell T. Brown Photographic Archive, a collection of original photographs, postcards, advertisements, and news articles which chronicle the history of Ames, Iowa. This collection, searchable by keyword, can be viewed online. Iowa Genealogical Society A great source with information on Iowa cemeteries, county histories, census records. For a small hourly fee, access is available to Ancestry.com. State Historical Society of Iowa Has collections in Des Moines (including the State Archives) and in Iowa City. Excellent source for microfilmed Iowa newspapers as well as federal and state census. Recently added: microfilmed records of counties in Iowa. Find more in the catalog. They also have a collection of probate records. The Library of Congress has a wealth of information including access to search and display catalog records for the over 12 million books and other items in the collections of the Library of Congress. There are also links to other library catalogs, copyright, and historical information. Project Gutenberg contains the full-text of thousand of titles in the public domain. Good source for history information if you are researching the life and times of your ancestors. Also Has some books in electronic format which may be downloaded. Allen County Public Library includes a renown collection of all things genealogical!
