Resources

Two interesting blogs:

Genealogy Tip of the Day
"Quick, Short Genealogy Tips By Michael John Neill"

Free Genealogy Tools  A mix of well-known and some obscure (but useful) sites.

If you are just beginning your family history search, Lisa Louise Cooke's Family History: Genealogy Made Easy podcast is a great place to start.  And be sure to visit the FamilySearch site where you'll find research guidance, lessons, software, databases (including the 1880 US Federal Census), and access to the Family History Library catalog.  Record Search, a pilot website of FamilySearch, contains millions of records indexed by volunteers and has links to original records. And Cyndi's List offers over 264,000 links to genealogical sites.

Other resources to check:

Ames Historical Society  "The mission of the Society is to identify, record, collect, preserve, and provide access to evidence of the history of Ames and its immediate vicinity from pre-settlement times to the present.  To further this mission the Society collects and preserves artifacts and archival materials, operates an 1860s one-room schoolhouse museum, and plans to create a future Ames History Center and Museum."

Ancestry.com Part of The Generations Network.  Huge collection of census records, immigration, natuarlization records, family trees, directories nad more.  Databases may be searched without charge, but some records require a paid membership.

Eastman's Online Genealogical Newsletter  "The Daily newsletter for genealogy consumers, packed with straight talk -- hold the sugar coating -- whether the vendors like it or not!"
A discussion group has recently been added to this site.

Gensoftreviews    "All the genealogy software, reviewed and rated by you."

Iowa Genealogical Society Located in Des Moines.

"Our state-of-the-art facility integrates technology with traditional research. The facility provides a wireless network, high speed Internet access, a bank of computers, and a reader-printer that scans microfilm images direct to CR-ROM. There are 20,000 volumes and 15,000 microforms, including: vital records, histories, federal and state census records, military records, and more."

State Historical Society of Iowa "The State Historical Society of Iowa has a dual mission of preservation and education."  Has many Iowa newspapers on microfilm.  Recently added: microfilmed records of counties in Iowa.  Find more in the catalog.
