Bulletin insert (5/29/2011)

posted May 28, 2011 8:11 AM by Uta Hempel

Today’s Bulletin contains a list of committees which are currently active in St. Matthew Church.  At our meeting last Sunday after Mass, several people listed at the beginning of the Bulletin as “Servants and Contact Persons” decided to be relieved of their duties and responsibilities.  There was a consensus that those on the list would like to be replaced.  Several  members were absent and so I need to hear from Pam Moore, Peg Gurtis and Mark Kidder.  We will retain Ann Kelly, Jeanette Bowlby, Tammy Spangler, and Joanne Lasko.
The form in he bulletin is asking for those of you who would like to be part of those committees that are listed.  The Parish Council needs to be voted on by the parish, but we still need to know who might be interested.  So please take time to put your name on the list and drop it in the collection basket or leave it in the Sacristy for me.  The Bishop has asked that this be completed by June 22, my expiration date.  I have asked several members of the parish to help me in the Parish Council process, especially.  I ASK YOU TO PLEASE COOPERATE IN THIS PROCESS.  IF YOU KNOW OF PEOPLE OUT OF TOWN FOR THE HOLIDAY, PLEASE TAKE THEM A COPY OF THE BALLOT.

Bulletin Boards

I have had several good comments regarding the bulletin boards.  I would like to use them for both parish news and current events in the Church and society.  I would ask that you not put or remove anything from them unless you clear it through me.  Please give me the list of ministers for particular months and I will post them for you.

Gethsemane Trip

I am currently investigating the possibility of a trip to the Abbey in Bardstown, KY.  I have spoken to the Abbot there who suggested we might want to spend an overnight at the Abbey.  The cost of a room for couples or singles would be about $30 per person.  I would like to do this during Lent.  Several people have already contacted me about this possibility, and I would like to open it to other churches in the area if there isn’t sufficient interest here.  Please keep me abreast of the possibility for you or you and your spouse.

A Church That Heals

The Bishop of our Diocese, Bishop Michael J. Bransfield, has written a Pastoral response to the bleak state of Behavioral Health issues and treatment centers in the State.  You can find a copy of this Pastoral letter in the current issue of “The Catholic Spirit.”  Please take the time to read it in order to understand the need for more intervention for those suffering from drug use, alcoholism, and prescription drug abuse.  West Virginia ranks as one of the highest states in the country for teen-age suicide and consanguinity [marriage between first cousins, brothers and sisters, etc.] which results in troubling social ills.  Do we care enough for those who are in danger from addictions of any kind?  Being an addict is not a pleasant experience, and it only worsens as the person becomes dependent.  It results in a relationship with something other than another person and marginalizes the ones who need our understanding, love, and help.
