The Course: The Yin and Yang of the Western World In East Asian thought, Yin and Yang are the two complementary forces or principles that make up all aspects and phenomena of life. Yin is earth, female, dark, passive, and absorbing; it is present in even numbers and in valleys and streams and is represented by the tiger, the colour orange, and a broken line. Yang is heaven, male, light, active, and penetrating; it is present in odd numbers and mountains and is represented by the dragon, the colour azure, and an unbroken line. Together they express the interdependence of opposites. From a humanities standpoint, in this class we will explore the vital role that contrast plays in the arts of the Western world. We will do this on both a microstructural as well as a macrostructural level by looking at how artists, writers, and musicians use contrast to create their works, as well as how contrasts between cultures, time periods, and philosophies help give each their own unique attributes. What makes this course unique is that after we have explored these ideas, we will be able to see and hear the actual works in their original surroundings.
