About 100 congregation members attended on an ideal Sunday evening. This was another in the series of events that are part of the St. Joseph Catholic Church celebration of the 100 years of its church building in Jefferson. It was held in and around the classic Spring Lake Park roller rink, which is 80 years old in 2009, a still wonderfully-maintained slice of yesteryear with its open-air skating on a maple floor.
The grilling was done by Jerry & Pat Fields, using the Greene County Cattlemen's big portable grill. St. Joe member Dan Towers, who is Greene County Conservation director, volunteered to move picnic tables into place near the roller rink for the event. Skating rink manager Andy Krieger joined in all the fun, encouraging the skaters with lively old rock 'n' roll music and with contests like the "how low can you go" skates under a "limbo" stick. Two folks showed up from Ames, Pat Kingsbury and Mike Kipp, saying they were driving around the area looking for an ice cream social when they saw our group and then heard the music. They're big dancers, Kipp explained, so they stopped to see if they could possibly dance in the middle of the skating floor while the skaters were rolling around them. Krieger gave that idea a quick O.K., and so Kingsburg & Kipp were dancing it up under the mirrored ball. "I guess we're you're token Baptists for this event," Kipp quipped.
