St. John's Parish Heritage Group.

St. John's Parish Heritage Group was formed in 2002 to promote research into local heritage issues and to organise the restoration of sites of local historical significance, within the parish of St. John's, which is part of the modern parish of Knockcroghery, St. John's & Rahara, in South Roscommon. 

Meetings are held every month in St. John's Community Centre, Lecarrow. F42 CK11

To achieve its aims the group organises lectures on historical issues, undertakes heritage initiatives, collects material for publication and collects funds towards these purposes. 

To date the group has achieved the following:

Lectures & talks of local interest.

Access to and maintenance of Kilcommon Old Graveyard. Planting of trees and flowers. Erection of memorial marker to those who have no headstone.

Access to and maintenance of St. John's Old Catholic Graveyard. Planting of trees and flowers.

Access to and maintenance of St. John's Old Protestant Graveyard. Planting of trees and flowers.

Archaeological Report on "The Stones", Lecarrow.

Publication of "The Rindoon Journal".

Help with the organising and running of Lecarrow Pattern Mass.

Organising of walks in St. John's Wood & guided visits to Rindoon.

Heritage Week: Various interesting activities each year.

Supervising conservation work on Rindoon Town Walls and Towers & on Parish Church at Rindoon.

Conservation work on St. John's "Hospital".

Development of a Heritage Walk at Rindoon and information signage. 

The distribution of grants/funds received from the Heritage Council for the Maintenance/Restoration work done at the Rindoon site Rinnegan, Lecarrow.

The distribution of grants/funds received from Roscommon County Council for the Maintenance/Restoration work done at the Rindoon site Rinnegan, Lecarrow.

Current projects include:

Fieldnames survey of Parish.

Photographing and recording memorials in St. John's and Kilcommon old cemeteries and uploading them on this website and historic graves.com.

Co-ordinating with television producers on future programs in this area.
