Firefighters Want Legislation on Cancer
July 21, 2008

The St. John's Fire Fighters Association is hoping a cancer fundraising tour will bring about awareness on Presumptive Cancer Legislation. Firefighters held a boot drive over the weekend to raise money for Daffodil Place through the Typically Canadian tour, a cross-country fundraiser that involves the grandson of former Premier Frank Moores, Kyle Braatz.  His father is a fire fighter in London, Ontario.

Local President Chuck Nurse says currently there is no legislation in Newfoundland for fire fighters who develop work related cancers. The fundraiser this weekend raised $4,300.

No Action On Presumptive Cancer

The Province is now virtually the only jurisdiction in Canada that does not recognise any forms of cancer as an occupational disease for professional firefighters. Newfoundland has yet to act on the recommendations of the Workers Compensation Review Board. The Executive met with the Minister of Labour Shawn Skinner in early June to discuss our dismay at the lack of progress.
