If anyone in our family had known about or understood the early warning signs, common symptons, risks factors and major complications associated with thyroid disease; and how it all relates to overall health and wellness, including other life threatening medical conditions perhaps we would have been better prepared to make more aggressive diagnostic testing and treatment demands and/or decisions early on in this difficult journey for Stevie JoEllie and all of us.
They say lightning does not strike twice in the same place and maybe that theory needs to be revised. Although we are no strangers to cancer, we could have never imagined Thyroid Cancer as a real possibility for a young woman only 21 years old, everyone we knew who has endured any type of head or neck cancer is or was elderly or a serious heavy smoker so we made some erroneous assumptions.
No doctors ever mentioned to us the possibility of a familial link (genetic) risk factor to consider in her case, although they should have. Several of our aunts, two uncles, a male cousin, our beloved grandfather and our father, have all fought their cancer battles. Our own father is barely holding on after complications from his esophageal cancer treatments and scarring from multiple surgeries. Yet, we are not defeated by the seeming impossibility of the odds we now face.
We are here getting the word out and hoping to make a difference, not just for our Stevie JoEllie, our father and all the other friends and family members we have lost to one cancer or another, but for all the other vibrant young women, who like my sister, full of life, young and beautiful, find themselves plagued with many seemingly unrelated medical complaints and problems during puberty and early adolescence culminating in the heart stopping, life changing and potentially devastating diagnosis of Thyroid Cancer.
Stevie JoEllie's Cancer Care Fund, seeks to partner with existing Thyroid Cancer and Endocrine Disorders Education Programs, Patient Advocacy Groups, Community and Corporate Sponsors, existing websites, Psychological Counselors, other support groups and Complimentary-Alternative Medicine Consultants to help bring you the most complete relevant information you may not otherwise be aware of as you research your options and share our journey.
So, on behalf my sister, Stevie JoEllie, our father, Steven, our mother Wilma (who serves as our Support Group Moderator and Development Director) all our friends and all the volunteers that in one way or another have contributed and are helping us make this dream happen; I thank you.
Thank you for your time. Thank you for your support. Thank you for your donations and contributions, but most importantly we all thank you for your prayers.
