Seasteads

These stories explore the future of “seasteads,” or homesteads at sea.

Right now, countries bordering the water lay claim to areas of oceans and seas up to 200 nautical miles from their shore.  The areas beyond those borders are called “international waters” which nobody can own, according to international treaties.

But what if ownership of sectors of the open sea were permitted for individuals?  What if cities, then entire countries formed on the sea, nations with no land at all?  This series of stories explores a future history of seasteads, from the early failed attempts, the tentative outposts, the harsh reaction by land nations, to the difficulties of technology, environment, and the darker side of humanity.

It is my intent to someday combine these stories into a single anthology, complete with maps of the emerging and evolving aquanations.

"First Flow of the Tide."  A new sea-based religion is growing and spreading through the aquanations of the world like a tsunami.  Dillon's daughter

"Gazelle's Last Run."  A drug smuggler uses the most recent evolution of submarine technology in his struggle to transport his cargo.  But his enemies may include not only the drug enforcement authorities and a  saboteur in his crew, but also his own conscience.  Status:  submitted for publication.

"A Green Isle in the Sea."  A hurricane strikes an above-surface seastead.  Jeri Calistus may have less to fear from nature's power than from one man's poor decisions.  This story earned an Honorable Mention in the Writers of the Future contest.  Status:  submitted for publication.
