Apart from his role as Sound Engineer for Avril Kinsey and the Cape Town Academy of Music, Steven has a solid grounding in Blues and Rock music, having formed his own group in the 80s. Since then he has performed Lead and Rhythm guitar for a variety of other groups. As a result his approach to teaching is varied, practical and results orientated.
ooo When Avril Kinsey heard his recent Live 2 album recording session, she approached him with the idea of teaching blues and rock guitar styles to beginner students, to not only enlarge the scope of the academy, but to provide a much needed service for aspiring musicians.
oooSteven worked with Carlos Bonell of the Royal School of Music in London on his book: "Guitar" (published by New Holland) which introduces the basics of all guitar styles and covers the history of the guitar from the Lute to the modern electric.
oooHis lessons include: repertoire, technique, musicianship and sound balance, as well as advice on the purchase and use of guitars, amplification and effects units. Successful students may also be offered the opportunity to record a CD.
oooSteven's philosophy of teaching is to enable the student to develop an understanding of music in general, as well as focus on improvisation and music reading, while developing the ability to play in a band.
oooMusic is fun, rewarding and uplifting, but it can also play a therapeutic role in providing a measurable progress, self confidence and the ability to interact with others through making music together.
This year Steven is busy preparing for his LTCL Trinity College of Music Classical Guitar Performance Licentiate. He is seen above with his new Tobias Braun Guitar.
