Victorian Workhouse

'Skilly for Breakfast'
starring the evil
George Catch, Workhouse Master

Content

The Victorian Workhouse filled the poor with dread.
Some were well managed but many were run by brutal Workhouse masters, often retired policemen or soldiers.
In this workshop children get the opportunity to put the notorious Workhouse
master, George Catch, on trial.
Using written resources they gather evidence about his treatment of inmates; material all based on true events. Children then question Mr Catch about his working methods and decide whether he should keep his job or get the sack.
