What's Available?

The World Wildlife Fund or WWF is a well known non-profit organization that works around the world with endangered species and environmental issues.  Because of this, their website is quite extensive and includes everything from job openings to current news reports about world issues.  There are also a number of helpful resources for the classroom such as games, lists of endangered species and information, where the fund is currently working, and my favorite component, "Wild Finder" where students can interact with maps and species from all over the world.  A few additional fun things are: free e-cards, recent news, "camera traps" where WWF snap photos and sounds of animals in several locations in the world, plus other amazing visuals.

How to use WWF in your classroom?

In terms of mulitculturalism, this website offers some unique contributions for learning.  In their "Wild Finder"- http://worldwildlife.org/wildfinder/searchByPlace.cfm -students are able to search their interactive map by location or search by species.  This allows for students to learn more about where they or their families are from, or more about other students their classroom.  Students can build a stronger classroom community by becoming framiliar with the world and its differences, without highlighting the differences in the way people look.  It also is an excellent tool for mapping and geography, while teaching conservation and planet-awareness at the same time.  In addition, because the WWF is working at least 100 countries at all times it serves as an interesting window for students to see how WWF coordiantes the world's diversity.  Students can be informed about current planet events while learning more about the diversity of other students and themselves.
