Reading List

Tip: How to add, remove or customize items in this list

On this page are a list of books from a variety of genres.  Some books/series posted are some of my favorites that I read when I was younger.  Other books are just classics that everyone should read.  This list can be used to aid in picking books for book reports.  As students recommend books, or I come across some treasures, I'll add them to the list.

Eleanor Estes A Hundred Dresses
Frances Hodgson Burnett A Little Princess I love this movie, but the book is WAY different. It's a great read, though. I enjoyed this book very much!
Paula Danziger Amber Brown series
L.M. Montgomery Anne of Green Gables series I've read the entire series, and they are a wonderful (and beautiful) read! I was very outdoorsy when I was younger, so these books hit home. They are middle school level, so definitely for the advanced reader. Such a heartwarming series.
Madeleine L'Engle A Wrinkle in Time I remember reading this book during grade school, and I couldn't put it down. I even brought it in the car with me to read because I could not part with it.
Richard Peck A Year Down Yonger
Anna Sewell Black Beauty
Dav Pilkey Captain Underpants series
Roald Dahl Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Roald Dahl Charlie and the Great Class Elevator
E.B. White Charlotte's Web
Various Authors Dear America series I'm a huge fan of historical fiction books, and I read many of these when I was younger. They are for an advanced reader, but they are excellent reads.
Beverly Cleary Dear Mr. Henshaw
Gail Carson Levine Ella Enchanted This story is a twist on the classic Cinderella tale. I read this book in middle school, so it's for an advanced reader. I loved this book so much! It was beautiful.
J.K. Rowling Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
E.L. Konigsburg From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweller
Eleanor Estes Ginger Pye
R.L. Stine Goosebumps series I LOVED these books when I was in 3rd grade. They are a great read; boys and girls alike will enjoy these books.
Louise Fitzhugh Harriet the Spy
J.K. Rowling Harry Potter Series These are probably my all-time favorite books. I've read the entire series twice. I'm a Harry Potter nut.
Louis Sachar Holes
Lynne Reid Banks Indian in the Cupboard
Scott O'Dell Island of the Blue Dolphins I don't remember too much about this book except that I really enjoyed it.
Roald Dahl James and the Giant Peach
Barbara Park Junie B. Jones series I read these books aloud to the third grade class I was with for the first half of my student teaching. They loved these books, and after reading one aloud, I understand why. They are hilarious!!
Laura Ingalls Wilder Little House on the Prarie
Louisa May Alcott Little Women I never read this book when I was younger; recently, my friend gave it to me as a gift, and I read it while in Ireland student teaching. I REALLY enjoyed this book, though. With it being a classic, it's definitely for an advanced reader. It's a great story taking place during the Civil War, so the history aspect of it appealed to me, too.
Norma Kassirer Magic Elizabeth This was my all time FAVORITE book when I was in 2nd grade! It's just a beautiful, magical story with a bit of mystery. A must read for all girls!
Lois Gladys Leppard Mandie series My best friend got me hooked on this series. They are a cute mystery series, and it felt like I was betraying Nancy Drew. Even still, I fell in love with these books because they took you to places abroad (like the catacombs), and there was history entwined within the stories.
P.L. Travers Mary Poppins
Roald Dahl Matilda
Avi Midnight Magic
Robert C. O'Brien Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH I really enjoyed this book when I was younger. It was another book that I COULD NOT put down.
Various Authors My America series This series is very similar to the 'Dear America' series, but I believe these books focus strictly on American history, whereas the 'Dear America' series can focus on other historical events outside of America.
Jean Craighead George My Side of the Mountain
Carolyn Keene Nancy Drew Mysteries I really enjoyed these books growing up. I could read them in a few hours because I could not put them down at all!! I love mysteries, and Nancy Drew was fantastic. I highly recommend these books!
J.M. Barrie Peter Pan
Astrid Lindgren Pippi Longstocking
J.K. Rowling Quidditch Through the Ages

Walter Farley The Black Stallion
Gertrude Chandler Warner The Boxcar Children series
C.S. Lewis The Chronicles of Narnia
Dan Gutman The Kid Who Became President
Mary Pope Osborne The Magic Tree House series I love these books because they are historical fictions! I use these books as read-alouds quite a bit, but that shouldn't stop the students from reading some on their own. I like to tie these book in with the content being studied in class.
Beverly Cleary The Mouse and the Motorcycle I enjoy this book every time I read it; it's so enjoyable.
Michael Ende The Neverending Story

Fances Hodgson Burnett The Secret Garden I love the movie, so I finally read the book, and it is just as beautiful. Love it!

Jon Scieszka The Time Warp Trio
E.B. White The Trumpet of the Swan
E.L. Konigsburg The View from Saturday
Ellen Raskin The Westing Game This was a very fun and interesting read! I couldn't put it down, and as I read it, I was trying to figure out the mystery! The end takes a surprising twist, and when I finished it, I wanted to read it again.
