Christian Formation and Youth Ministry at St. Catherine is about making faith relevant to teens, allowing the youth of our parish to realize that they are chosen by God to be disciples, and learning how to live out our Catholic Faith.

The Catholic Church affirms parents as the first and the best teachers of their children in all ways, particularly in matters of faith. Christian Formation seeks to accompany and support parents in their efforts.  Christian Formation prepares students to live as Catholic Christians both within the parish community and the wider community. Christian Formation includes religious education and theology, but also extends beyond the academic to instill a sense of Catholic identity, Christian discipleship, and true conviction of faith. We are truly seeking and encountering the face of Christ in each other, in our parish, and in the world.

Program Outline and Components

The high school Christian Formation program has four main components:

 Large Group:

All students, 9th-11th grade, attend Large Group Sessions. Large group sessions are held monthly and are faith formation and spiritual growth oriented. Large group sessions are to help foster personal conviction of faith and relationship with Christ, as well as the sense of Church and belonging to a community, among students. In-house sessions are 1.5 hours: typically a 1 hour presentation/activity led by Nicole or guest presenter, and a .5 hour small group discussion. Some large group sessions will be off-campus activities (typically a full-day event) such as St. John Bosco Youth Day at Holy Hill and Wisconsin Catholic Youth Rally (WCYR) at Mt. Mary College.

 Small Group:

Small group is for 9th and 10th grade students. Sessions will be held once a month, on a different night than large group. Students will split in small groups, by grade level. Sessions are content-based, following the High School theology guidelines from the Archdiocese. Students will not be “tested” or graded on knowledge of content, but they are responsible for attendance and participation, and should demonstrate an understanding of material through participation in class discussion and activities.

 Confirmation Preparation

Junior year small group is preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Confirmation preparation is directed at gaining a deeper understanding of the Sacrament itself, Catholic and Christian life, its challenges, and what it really means to be a Confirmed Catholic.

 Service, Retreats, Etc.:

In addition to the monthly large and small group meetings, there are two required service projects, and a retreat.  See sections on Retreats and      Service under “program requirements” for more detailed information.
