Welcome Parents and Potential Participants!

Of all the clubs, sports, and activities in high school, I believe Speech and Debate is the most rewarding and useful to developing skills needed to be successful in the world today.

What is Speech and Debate?

There are several categories of each.  Both are designed to accommodate novices and advanced participants, shy people and the loquacious.  Speech events be as simple as just reading with no one looking at you, to memorizing and performing a dialogue from a play, to writing an original speech,  speaking off the top of your head for 5 minutes, or even presenting the equivalent of a stand up comedy routine.  Debate events include one on one, or two on two debates.  Some are prepared before the tournament, one give 15 minutes of prep at the tournament.  Click on the Speech Events link for detailed information on each event.  Students are welcome to participate in either Speech or Debate, but they are encouraged to participate in both.  

Get a Varsity Letter

The Speech and Debate team is an OSAA activity which is equivalent to being on a sports team.  It will require a commitment of time, some money, and travel.  Participants will have to meet the same requirements athletes do with respect to grades and appropriate conduct.  Full participation will earn students a varsity letter.
