What was the amphibian's favorite Irish song? "The Froggy Froggy Dew"

Why should you never ask a frog how deep is the water?

Cause they always say: "Kneedeep" (chooses to remain anonymous)

When I visited The Dry Garden nursery on the Berkeley/Oakland border a couple of days ago, Richard, the owner, told me that business lately has been abysmal. Right now the nursery's ability to survive is in question. The Dry Garden is a gem - Richard carries many plants that are very difficult to find elsewhere. He has a great collection of succulents, plants from South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, as well as some great citruses. He regularly stocks Buddha's Hand citrus, and some other unusual citrus (vanilla flavored orange, etc.). I encourage you all to patronize this unusual and delightful nursery - it would be tragic if it had to close. Also tell your friends and clients to make a visit. The address is 6556 Shattuck - not far from the Berkeley Bowl. Phone: (510) 547-3564. The nursery is closed on Mondays. Also, Richard, is looking for a cheap, or not expensive, web designer. Please give him a call if you know someone who might qualify. Thanks, Gillian Scharff

Dear People, Listen for Life has been working with people in Geneva who have a project in which children (6 to 16) participate in helping to increase awareness of and to eradicate child labor.  The class is instructed about child labor and then interested students make drawings to be submitted as detailed on the attached document [attached below - bottom of page, scroll all the way down. eds.].  The drawings are judged by a panel and191 drawings (representing one from each member country in the United Nations) are chosen to be exhibited in Geneva, Switzerland and other places around the world.
The attached document covers the rules and procedure.  You can also go to the website, www.genevaworld.com to get further information and see the results of the Geneva World first project..
If you are a teacher or know any teachers  who might be interested in having his or her class participate in this wonderful project, please pass this information along.  The founder would like 150 entries from the United States. Thank you, Andy Anderson

Dear Friends, Equality California has placed a scrolling

Q: What do you get when a gang of robbers jump into a pool?
A: A crime wave.

Hi, Have you heard that Ken Starr -- and the Prop 8 Legal Defense Fund -- filed legal briefs defending the constitutionality of Prop 8 and attempting to forcibly divorce 18,000 same-sex couples that were married in California last year? The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in this case on March 5, with a decision expected within 90 days.
The Courage Campaign has created a video called "Fidelity," with the permission of musician Regina Spektor, that puts a face to those 18,000 couples and all loving, committed couples seeking full equality under the law.
Please watch this heartbreaking video now. If you have the same reaction that I did, please help me spread the word by sharing it with your friends and family ASAP:
http://www.couragecampaign.org/Divorce
The more people who see this video, the more people will understand the pain caused by Prop 8 and Ken Starr's shameful legal proceeding.
After you watch the video, please join me and over 300,000 people who have signed a letter to the state Supreme Court, asking them to invalidate Prop 8 and reject Starr's case. Thanks. Amy azing_1717_at_yahoo.com

Dear Friends, Ordinarily I don't send political posts to my music lists, but this is a post having to do with the impact of politics on music (and other arts.). The so-called 'moderates" in the Senate are now demanding that items that don't stimulate the economy be removed from Obamas stimulus bill. High on their list is 50 million new dollars for the National Endowment for the Arts. I don't know whether or not it's been removed yet, but if you share my belief that this money is well spent I would urge you to contact your
senators and let them know. You can also contact the Obama campaign at the address below, and let them know why you think this is worth fighting for.

http://my.barackobama.com/page/s/kainestory

Money spent on the arts probably delivers more stimulus per dollar than almost any other investment. Here are two reasons why.

1) To have a long term effect, the work funded in a stimulus program has tocreate not just jobs but wealth. Bridges to nowhere won¹t create any new
wealth. Bridges that increase commerce, and energy plants that create new energy, do create wealth. Art is wealth producing. Picasso regularly took about twenty dollars worth of paint and canvas, and used his skill to transform it into millions of dollars worth of art. This is an extreme case,of course, but every artist transforms raw materials into valuable pieces of
craftsmanship. That creates new wealth.

2) One of the biggest problems with stimulus funding is that businesses often don¹t do what they are contracted to do. Companies are given taxbreaks, even outright cash, to start a business in a location that needs jobs, then they close their local factory because they can makemore moneyelsewhere. Banks are given money to lend, and instead spend it on bonuses, mergers, and thousand dollar parchment trash cans. The way to solve this problem is to give the money to people who would do the work you want them to do EVEN IF THEY WERE NOT BEING PAID AT ALL. Artists are the only
productive workers in that category. They will work on their projects on their own time, invest their own money into them, and will continue to work even when no money is coming in. Because of all the personal capital and sweat equity they have already invested, most artists need just a little bit more capital to take their work to the next level where it can be financially productive.

I'm not talking about artists who allegedly make paintings only in garrets and then never show them to anybody. Every artist I've known actively seeks audiences, and most eventually find them. Those audiences pay them money for their work--just not enough for them to consistently make a profit. (They're
rather like American automobile manufacturers that way.) A few well-placed grants can turn these artists into productive businesses that generate jobs for countless other people. A successful concert generates work for ticket salesman, tee shirt vendors and food concessions, creates advertising revenue for newspapers and magazines‹the list goes on and on. The fact that art is an essential part of what makes us human, and enriches the human spirit, should not cause us to forget that it has many other uses as well. - Teed Rockwell

Hello, friends, As many of you know I play in the Celtic/Grateful Dead band, Wake the Dead. We have some shows coming up. Please see below. Two of my guitars were stolen this week. Naturally, this has been very distressing. If you are someone who goes to jams, music stores, and the like, would you please go to my website (www.sylviaherold.com) and take a look at the pictures and full descriptions there? The guitars in question were: a blonde Collings flattop, model "CJ." It was in a custom, pea-green soft case w/ green leather handles. The other guitar was a mid-brown, archtop, Epiphone in a black soft case. - Sometimes instruments come back. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
Sylvia p.s. And here is a message from Danny Carnahan about Wake the Dead. Where else can you hear Grateful Dead songs played on bagpipes?

Hi, all--Since many of you are interested in carbon reduction, I am forwarding his interesting item from a member of the South Bay Vegetarian Meetup group. BTW, in case any of you are interested: the Vegetarian Meetup group is very friendly, and welcomes those of us who (like me) still eat meat sometimes--and the food is always delicious. Dear Friends,  After a long quiet (i.e., busy) spell, here are three short items for you to be aware of and, perhaps, take action on.  (The last is useful only for those not too far from Berkeley, California, but the other two apply to all of you.)  - Darien
By the way, if you want to be added to or deleted from this email list, please simply let me know.  You can email me * conjoin@macnexus.org   In these days of economic uncertainty, please reach out to each other to build community networks of support and encouragement!  Peace and justice, generosity and compassion - Darien:  NURTURE Others need your help!  Every spring for 12 years Chris Nelson, Women's Health Care Nurse Practitioner, has gone - at her own expense - to Guatemala to be a preceptor for nursing students from the US and Canada. The delegations are organized by Pueblo Partisans, a Canadian NGO (http://www.pueblopartisans.org) and bring adult, pediatric and gynecological screening to medically indigent people in poor urban and rural communities in Guatemala for 6 weeks annually (with follow up as needed after that.)
If you can assist with lab and treatment expenses for Guatemalan people please send a donation to Pueblo Partisans by March 1st, c/o Chris Nelson 2300B Estes Rd. Chico, Ca. 95928. Also, if you would like to donate supplies we would welcome Multivitamins (prenatal, senior, children's) and over the counter analgesics (pain medications like Tylenol, Advil, etc.).  Contact Chris 530-345-7590 (chris4pax@chico.com) if you have these or other medications you wish to donate or if you would like more information about the work in Guatemala.
The students and Chris pay their own way, but they must fund raise for medications and supplies for the clinics they do daily. Most of the women they see can't afford the lab cost for their pap smears and certainly can't afford follow up care when that is needed. The clinics also often see children and adults who require assistance in getting care for serious health problems.

Interesting article.  I should note that the farther east you go in Europe, the more strongly a lot of the old customs still survive.

I think Pakistan's Hellenic-and-Silk-Road Pagans, the Kalash--descended from some of Alexander the Great's soldiers who settled and married local women--are a fascinating group also.  Here for more info:
