Greetings, All! It's that time of year again: we have to say "farewell" to Dumuzi. RSVP/directions: inanna_temple-at-yahoo.com Oh yes,Donations gleefully accepted, but not demanded. A Blessed Spring to you.The Temple's ceremony commemorating the Descent will be this upcoming Saturday, April 11, in Mountain View at 1 PM. This is one of our two really big annual events. This is the time when Inanna descends to, and returns from, the Underworld, with the aftermath of Her return leading to the establishment of the Mesopotamian agricultural cycle. This will be a big ritual and a big party. Please bring something to sit on (pillow, etc.) Please bring one or more items for potluck, from the following possibilities: lamb, goat or beef (from well cared for animals: Inanna has specified that factory farming and other inhumane methods are anathema to Her. Free-range and other humanely treated animals are Her specified requirement) cream (or non-dairy substitute) beer wine grapes dolmas pita bread non-pita bread baklava anything made with cinnamon lentils asparagus lettuce (in whatever salad you please) flowers (preferably hand picked, but store bought fine) greenery (preferably hand picked, but store bought okay) ALSO, VERY IMPORTANT: Be sure that you do the following BEFORE you arrive (this goes for ALL of our rituals): * Bathe with soap and water (yes, there HAVE been people who have forgotten to use soap, believe it or not!)* Shampoo your hair (can be done a day or two before, as long as the hair is very clean for the ritual)* Wash your hands (with soap!)* Brush your teeth* Freshen your breath as needed* Cut or manicure your fingernails This is not just polite, it's what Inanna wants. She likes everything to be nice and pretty. THEREFORE, IT WOULD BE INAPPROPRIATE TO COME TO OUR RITUAL WITHOUT HAVING DONE THESE THINGS. That's the bare minimum. We encourage people to dress up pretty for this. What to expect:Shoes to be removed upon entering the front door.Standard openings (for our temple)A structured portion of the ritual (this will be longer than our lunar Temple rituals: it will last about an hour)A big feast and party Standard closings Pat Ryan's Celtic Junket. Chapman Stick, Hindustani Ragas. 7981 Old Redwood Hwy More from Teed: Cheryl is one of the foremost players in the world in a variety of Historical Harp styles, and her colleagues (Roy Whelden on Viola de Gamba and Peter Maund on Percussion) are also world class. Those of you who are on my list because of Indian music: Medieval European music, which is one of Cheryl’s specialties, has a lot of strong affinities with Hindustani music, partly because of influences that entered Europe at that time because of the Crusades. Those of you in Sonoma County should note the March 28th Gig in Santa Rosa. Cheryl doesn’t play in Sonoma County that often. I’ve seen her perform many times, and would recommend taking advantage of this opportunity. -- Teed Rockwell, Touchstyle Fretboard (aka Chapman Stick®) http://cdbaby.com/cd/teed www.myspace.com/teedrockwell Fellowship of the Spiral Path: Everyone is Welcome! 3/29 Kwaun Yin with Diana Paxon & 4/26 Liturgy of the Lady 7:30 BFUU (Cedar at Bonita) BFUU.orghttps://bfuu.org Deena Metzger is making a rare visit to the Bay Area & will be joining as at Daré March 8th! Friends— In Sept. 2009, The Independent Eye is collaborating with Sonoma County Repertory in a puppet/mask staging of Shakespeare's The Tempest.
Our preparations include bimonthly workshops, and we're also offering a
close-up view of the nine-month gestation of this babe via the
ultrasound blogosphere. In other words, I'm posting a weekly blog
of workshop reports, storyboards, videos, design sketches, photos of
puppets in process, research and wild ideas on the evolution of this Tempest. We welcome comments. We're at http://www.independenteye.org/news/index.ht The Tempest
weblog is for people interested in theatre, Shakespeare, puppetry,
backstage glimpses, magical islands or the creative process in
general. So we invite you to participate in its evolution. I post every Monday or Tuesday. Still recovering from the opening of Rash Acts, with two more weeks to go. If my opening-night post-partum bronchitis clears up, sculpting for Tempest starts tomorrow. Peace & joy— Conrad Bishop

An Open Letter: Ritual Theatre Conference/Festival: An Invitation and a Statement from the Inaugural Organizing Committee (Please note that signatories are those who attended the final meeting in November.) January 4, 2009 Berkeley, Ca. Dear friends and Colleagues, The organizing committee of Spiritmasque Ritual Theatre Conference/ Festival is writing this invitation to all of you who have contacted us since the idea of creating a festival gathering of peers was concocted over a champagne breakfast in October of 2007. Creating a meeting of the minds between artists and scholars is a complex undertaking. The inaugural committee has come to realize that by ourselves we do not have sufficient resources and expertise to complete all the tasks necessary to create a successful festival. Our committee has drafted a tentative plan for a 3-4 day academic conference accompanied by live multicultural ritual theater and dance performances. Some performances, panels and workshops would be open to the public on a day-fee basis (local people who have not registered for the full conference). The projected registration for the conference would be 75-200 people. While the inaugural committee has done a year's worth of "homework" regarding networking with local groups, costs and considerations, and possible venues, we have not made any commitments for venues, performances, or vendors. Organizing an event of this sort requires, at a minimum, an administrator, a financial officer, an academic chair, an artist liaison, a facilities liaison, a publicity director, a webmaster, a fundraiser, one or more volunteer coordinators, technical support staff and an appropriate organizational structure. Because this is a first time event, there is no money to pay most of these people salaries. We have recruited volunteers for some jobs, but crucial positions remain vacant. The good news is that since People from every corner of the earth and at all levels of expertise are represented on this list - created as an open forum for planning and brainstorming:

For more information write to: spiritmasqueinfo@gmail.com
The collective wisdom and experience already gathered can - if shared - create a gathering to remember. The members of this committee have agreed to open the discussion and the creation of an eventual festival to those of you who have contacted us. We have decided that it is not in the best interests of the project for us as a sole entity to try to continue to produce it, and invite any of you who are so moved to become hands-on organizers. We remain strongly motivated, and will of course continue our involvement in supportive roles. The list owner has, therefore, removed the controls on this list regarding posting and while this will remain a moderated list, it is now open to all comments, visioning, and brainstorming. Documents such as meeting notes, visions, and projected budget are available upon request. Lezlie Kinyon: Academic Chair: Chairing the committee in charge of organizing paper and panel presentation selection prior to and at the conference itself. Kitty Crowe, Liaison for the venue selected for the conference itself Lauren Hotchkiss, Administrator Deborah Bender Frankel, Liaison to the Neopagan community, event organizing adviser.
Jal Folk Theatre Pagan Federation Wessex Conference* (UK) houseoftheoldways-at-talktalk.net http://pfwessex.org/conference-2009.html TICKETS ON SALE NOW! *Glastonbury Town Hall Saturday 18th April 2009 Pagan Federation Wessex hosts a very successful Annual Conference at the Town Hall in Glastonbury. The next conference is on Saturday 18th April 2009, see Conference 2009 for details and email houseoftheoldways-at-talktalk.net or write to Adrian & Ann Bryn Evans, House of the Old Ways, 76 Balch Road, Wells, Somerset for tickets. This year we are hosting a Workshop for the first time. It will be with Gordon 'The Toad' MacLellan on Saturday 24th January 2009. Tickets are available from Adrian at the addresses above. The Jal Folk Theatre Company specialises in presenting folk tales and ancient travelling theatre. Artistic director, Patrick Jasper Lee, author of We Borrow the Earth, Beyond A Near Water, and Gypsy Goddess (CD), has a wealth of knowledge and experience to pass on regarding the Romani Gypsy culture and the lost art of travelling theatre. He will be presenting a talk entitled 'The Lost Art of Ritual Stagecraft,' together with a masked performance entitled, 'The Awakening', which typically presents the ritual elements of waking the soul, a theme much used in earlier times by Gypsy travelling players. Ancient masked theatre is something that he will be both illustrating via the performance and explaining within the talk as a means of helping us understand how rich the cultural past has been in ritual performance and how important it is to revive it today.
Sun Mar 8 12 - 3 pm International Women's Day Potluck Lunch and
Songfest - Oakland This year we meet on International Women's Day to pay homage to our brave sisters who have gone before us and to reaffirm our determination to struggle for the rights of working women around the world. Today, we fight for equality, free abortion on demand, equal pay for comparable work, universal free childcare and education, and an end to discrimination based on sex, race or sexual orientation. For the future, we are fighting for a society reorganized from the bottom up, where all women and men have equal voice in governing a collectively owned and democratically managed economy and society.
Alameda County Peace and Freedom Party will be celebrating International
Women's Day with a Potluck Lunch and Songfest and comrades from elsewhere are invited to attend. It will feature: A potluck lunch prepared and served by men (who will need to bring more to share than usual since women are taking the meal off) and A songfest led by Marianne Robinson with accompaniment by Eliot Kenin Men: Bring ready-to-eat food and beverages to share, willing hands. Women: Bring your voices and high spirits to sing women's labor and
revolutionary songs. If you don't know "Bread and Roses", this will be your chance to learn.. Niebyl-Proctor Marxist Library, 6501 Telegraph Avenue (one block north of Alcatraz Avenue), Oakland Contact: Norma J F Harrison normaha@pacbell.net
