Winter Play

From Lezlie & the TSCP Mummers...

July and August developments:
From Lezlie: It seemed, just as we found some ways, means and a place to begin the creative conversation/collaboration, we had to end ... or, put it off to next year, anyway.  The "economic downturn" has hit us very hardWhat most folk don't realize is that Lauren and I tend to put up the cash up front to make things happen, and this year the costs of venues & rehearsal space has skyrocketed - we have to fall back and re-organize in order to survive at all. (We have been able to negotiate something workable for 2010, but not for this year.) Many of the people who will be working on the Yule play next year will also be working on the "Goddess Cycle" in February for Fellowship of the Spiral Path.

With much gratitude to Kitty Crowe, we will be coming under the umbrella Magical Acts International Association in a true spirit of collaboration for this production.

Joyfully welcoming Hallie Frazer, who has agreed to direct this play for 2010.  Hallie is an accomplished theatrical director with a deep love of folklore and a theatrical resume stretching back over 30 years. The team for this production is Hallie Frazer, director, Lezlie Kinyon Playwright, Lauren Hotckiss music director.

Saying goodbye to Ric Goldman, Dance Master, who has left the production for reasons of artistic differences.
And, also to Spot on Sword, withdrawing for scheduling reasons. Most of the members live in areas that require long commutes to and from the East Bay, and did not feel, therefore, that they could make rehearsals.  After some conversation, this difficulty seemed insurmountable, and, sadly, Spot on sword withdrew from the project. You will all be missed.

A Dance Team who is willing to collaborate with the creation of this play is necessary to the success of this play, this setback is severe.
Please contact us immediately if you are a member of a longsword dance team and can collaborate with TSCP in creating this play. If you are a choreographer, please contact us concerning the other dance sequences.

Thank you, everyone, for coming on the 28th. I think we may have a play... FUND RAISING ACTIVITIES WILL HAPPEN! Contact Lezlie or Lauren with your ideas or for information concerning how to donate.

Kitty can post any notes, which will help in catching everyone else up - and - also keep us informed concerning MAIA & this play. (Kitty, we have to have the liability paperwork info on file at the venue in order to use it, thanks ...)

Final note on the script - this is, of course, a draft & it's not copy edited or the final version. You can call me or Lauren any time to talk about this play (I fear we'll talk your ear off).

2010 Performance schedule: The three weekends between Thanksgiving and Winter Solstice have been reserved in he venue. If ready, we can open Thanksgiving Weekend. Solstice weekend is penciled in if this play is a arousing success & we need to add a performance - however, that is a very busy time for everyone, and it is unlikely that we will choose to extend this play through the actual Holidays. We did forget to discuss Pantheacon - although it was brought up - we can talk about it later on.

A weekday evening free "gift" performance for the venue owners (our hosts), friends & relations of the cast & crew, donors, and the business people who made this play happen is also being discussed - it will likely be one of the final dress rehearsals.

Quick note about auditions: We can arrange for auditions to occur in the Hall in August - TSCP has always held a policy of open auditions. however, we also "weigh" the auditions of TSCP members (you have a Star) a little bit in their favor. (There has rarely been a "thundering horde" lining up for roles.)

The next step is for the Creative Team: Stage, Music, & Art direction, Dance, Fight, Tech chiefs to meet in the venue - please send the dates that you are available to meet in - to create a shared vision. There are a couple roles that need filling, particularly that of promotions, tech & costume chiefs, light & sound personnel that could -- and, probably should -- be filled right away.

The main decisions made yesterday that affects everyone are casting & rehearsals: casting the Kings & Queens first was agreed upon by all. We can arrange for auditions to occur in the Hall in August - casting the Kings & Queens first was agreed upon by all. Lauren will be seeking & talking to musicians, it's possible that they will begin
learning the music well in advance of casting. (If you want a singing role, you might catch up with her.)

And - the rehearsal schedule: After Labor day, it will be Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, with the possibility of fight rehearsals on Wednesdays after Matthew looks over his fall schedule. Music rehearsals will be in the Veteran's Hall on Mondays November, we plan to talk to them about rehearsing there for the duration, but the cost is high and some negotiations have to be made with the venue owners (county of Alameda). BB & have a lovely summer!

I think every woman should have a blowtorch.

Always remember: If you're alone in the kitchen and you drop the lamb, you can always just pick it up. Who's going to know?

Latest news - this will be in next month's newsletter as well- We cannot do a winter production for December 2009, due to lack of funding.
but here is other news...
Meeting results at the Albany Veterans Memorial Hall:

Yule Play 2010: We are penciled in for rehearsals  M (in the smaller banquet room for the musicians) -T-Th November 2010 (except Thanksgiving week) and December 4,5,6 & 10,11 &12  with Dec. 18 & 19  (The Holidays start in earnest that weekend, so that could be a problem) and New Year's weekend if we want it for the 2010 Yule play. We can pay the $250 security deposit any time - Charles is doing up a contract and figuring out the full cost. Those who want to see the place can do soon Mondays or Fridays AM when the office is open - call first to get in. It will be in the neighborhood of $7000.00 - this makes granting and other outside funding an imperative - partially in order to keep the ticket prices within reason. (They love the idea of making this an annual event!)

2009 Full Troupe Convocation (invitation is hereby issued to MAIA{Magical Acts} to attend): TSCP is affiliated with MAIA We can take September 10 - Thursday night - in the "banquet Room" 6-9 for the Full Troupe Convocation. However, the cost is a bit high, $250 security deposit - & $85 per hour (The $250 comes back.) for a total of $518. (-and- we must have proof of liability on file, no alcohol allowed.) Hate to say it but: Unless we have a big turnout & can pass the hat to cover the Hall rental, we should hold the annual convocation somewhere cheaper.  Also- frankly, we've found Sunday afternoons to be a better time for doing this (that would be September 13). Much as everyone would like to see the Hall, it might be a good idea to look elsewhere for  this one meeting. I can check on the Albany Library's meeting room availability once again - we can't potluck, but it's a nice meeting space.  Although there are no new scripts to review, the agenda for this year's meeting will still be pretty full...

As a permanent theatrical home: First off: they are not sanguine about any really "out there" productions which might involve drugs or "un-tastefully done" nudity (they had a bad experience).  That out of the way: The City of Albany is trying to buy the building from the County - the Veterans who manage and use he building won't be displaced, but all other users will be in limbo should that take pace.  There will be a major retro-fit of the building if/when a bond passes to buy the building. However - meantime - we may have the building as a "home venue" under the umbrella and in partnership with MAIA on a year-by-year basis by agreement with the Veterans themselves until such a time as the ownership of the building changes. A that time, we have to deal with the City of Albany (Would help if we knew someone on the City Council!) One of our number- either a MAIA member or a TSCP member (or both -_ representing "our group" should take on the role of building liaison to work with the manager, Charles, on providing liability information to be held on file (important!), scheduling, deposits, usage, lighting, and any other issues as they come up. The fact that we've had a couple veterans in our number really helps & Kay may want to explore making a connection here.  BB! Lezlie

Just so you know: there will be a TSCP Governance  Board opening during October and the Youth Member position is open now for an enthusiastic young person (under 18).
As one of the Founding Directors, I feel that my role is different from that of a board member, and will step back from Board business sometime around December 1.

Because of a crisis precipitated by last year's Yule production, it will be much like creating from scratch. There is much to do and to think about in order to create a sustainable group.
