Once again I'm playing in a Zankaar, which I like to call "the Raga of the Month Club". This one's scheduled on Saturday, November 22, ( 3pm-6pm) at Sanatana Dharma Kendra, 897 Kifer Road, Sunnyvale, CA 94085. The featured Raga is Charukeshi, which is basically Mixolydian with a flatted Sixth. (if that helps). It's originally a south Indian Raga, but was popularized by Ravi Shankar as a Hindustani Raga. Ali Akbar Khan composed a dialect of Charukeshi called Alam Malaya, which has somewhat stricter "up and down" rules. Some good people will be playing including Nachiketa Sharma on Hindustani vocals, Surinder Mann on Tabla and Sitar, and several Carnatic musicians. As usual the evening will conclude with poplular filmi tunes composed in the Raga. Come if you can make it. A splendid time will be had by all. Dear Womansong Singers - What a joyful day! An Evening Of Participatory Singing For Women Friday November 14 7:15 PM. With Special Guest Artist, Evelie Posch. First Congregational Church of Berkeley 2345 Channing Way at Dana Info: betsy@betsyrosemusic.org www.betsyrosemusic.org I know so many of us have worked very hard for this
moment, and hoped and feared and gone through the gamut of emotions.
May we apply our energies and hopes now to the real work- of rebuilding
Democracy together. I like to think that the election prayer that we
sang and shared together in recent circles had a little to do with this
amazing transformative moment. (I'll include it at the bottom for those
who want to see it again).
So we'll be in a spirit of celebration at the next Berkeley Womansong- and who better to add the international spirit that our guest artist, Evelie Posch, www.gypsyspiritmission.com/html/evelie_posch.html wonderful singer, songwriter, song leader, community inspirer! November has some wonderful seasonal celebrations woven into the calendar- Day of the Dead/All Souls Day, Thanksgiving, and Veterans Day. So we'll visit some new, and some familiar songs of life and death, gratitude, and peace, with deep prayers that this new administration will find ways to end the wars we are engaged in around the world. Save the evening, tell your friends- (and feel free to forward this on to your lists, or to websites that post events). "All that we do now must be done Hideous Will's Cotillion is back on as a semi-regular event. Humanist Hall proves to be a very hospitable setting, and is likely to remain the home of the Cotillion for the foreseeable future. Note that there is parking available next to the hall, and that public transportation stops reasonably close by. So mark your calendar with these dates (and my apologies for short notice for the first one; life's been throwing me a few curves lately that have me distracted): Saturday, 8 November, 2008Saturday, 21 February, 2009Saturday, 4 April, 20095:00 PM - 10:00 PMHumanist Hall390 27th Street, Oaklandhttp://www.humanisthall.org/ See you with bells on! --Joshua The boiler-plate info: Hideous Will's What?!? This is an occasion for *social* morris dancing, with an aim towards creating a Saturday-night- at-the-ale pick-up dancing. No kit, no busses, no skits, just music and dance. Go crazy! Bring bells, instruments, hankies, (I will have some sticks, but you can bring those too), humor, and energy. People often bring food and drink to share, too. Do as thou wilt. Waydaminnit...wot's this gonna cost? I pay $150 for the hall, which is the only out-of-pocket cost. You are invited to make donations to help me pick up the cost. If you are wondering how much is appropriate, a quick head-count and a little math will give you guidance. If you are feeling broke, don't sweat it; if you are feeling flush, go a little over. You got it-- that's Election Day. By the time we start the ritual, most of the country will already have voted, so what's left to do (aside from holding hands and hoping) In the Spiral Samhain rite, we will be honoring the mighty dead-- our ancestors of the flesh and spirit and the lands from which they came. After we've honored our personal ancestors, however, we'd like to direct some special energy toward the people who founded and have led our country in the right direction in the past. By honoring them, we strengthen their influence on the collective American consciousness. We need their help to keep this election tallyhonest, and to inspire and guide those who are elected, and help us get through the current hard times. Whoever wins is going to have a daunting task.
