LIZA DALBY

Hidden Buddhas: A Novel of Karma and Chaos

With its fascinating story of characters caught up in a world they themselves don't understand, Hidden Buddhas may well be Liza Dalby's best work yet. Besides taking us on a journey through little-known corners of Japan, it offers us an engaging and believable portrait of people driven to do things they may not have imagined." --Arthur Golden, author of Memoirs of a Geisha

This evening, Dalby will read from and talk about her new novel, as well as answer questions about Japanese culture and history.

MARY KARR

Lit: A Memoir

  Mary Karr on NPR

Karr has to die and survive several circles in hell till an unlikely posse of saviors and saints helps her stay clean despite her spring-loaded recoil from any spiritual talk. No one can predict the electrifying path she finds to salvation – including a deep peace with the mother who once tried to kill her. Lit is a knockout saga only Mary Karr could tell with such piercing humor.

Meredith Maran introduces her.

Saturday, Nov. 7 Euphonia KALW (FM 91.7) In-studio concert and interview Folk Music & Beyond" Hosted by Jo Ann Mar<p; Bob Campbell "http://www.kalw.org/" www.kalw.org Schindler Petaluma, CA Petaluma Historical Museum October 30, 2009 - December 13, 2009 FREE!!!! This exhibition tells the story of Oskar Schindler, the German-Catholic industrialist and rescuer of Jews during the Holocaust who was the subject of the film Schindler's List. In 1939, Schindler moved to Krakow and established an enamel works on the city's outskirts in Zablocie. That factory became a haven for about 900 Jewish workers, providing them relief from the brutality of the Plaszow labor camp nearby. In October 1944, Schindler was granted permission to relocate his enamel works to Bruennlitz, Czechoslovakia (this time as an armaments factory) and to take with him the Jewish workers from Zablocie. Through negotiations and bribes that depleted his war profits, Schindler was able to transfer more than 1,000 Jewish workers to his factory, ensuring their humane treatment and ultimately saving their lives This is what the film Schindler's Listis about. Michael Evans is an improvising drummer/percussionist and Moe! Staiano. a percussionist who usually uses found objects, but has moved to doing drumming on found objects on his trap set (i.e. prepared percussion). Moe! (yes, he includes the exclaimation mark in his name) has experimented through the years though solo percussion using pipes, food pans, pressure caps, sheet metals, nick-nacks & other stuff that has been found, given or stolen (mainly from Pizza Hut when he worked there including a nifty Spatula that he bows).
