Connie Champagne Rrazz Room @ Hotel Nikko 222 Mason btw O'Farrell and Ellis SF 40 years ago in June 1969, Judy Garland's body lay in state at Frank Campbell's Funeral Home, New York City. After waiting in line all day--many in heels!--to pay their respects to Judy, a diverse group of queer folks retired to a favorite watering hole on Christopher Street to drink a toast to their fallen idol. The police in those days regularly raided gay bars. As they pulled their patrol cars up to the Stonewall Bar, they had no idea how bad their timing would be. The patrons channeled their grief and anger into a little event called the Stonewall Riots. Thus began the modern day LGBT freedom movement. "40 years later: After you march down Market Street in your ruby slippers, the Rrazz Room invites you to channel your joy and pride into a celebration of artistry by the incredible Connie Champagne." Champagne delivers the Garland classics such as "The Man That Got Away "& the "Trolley Song, " in addition to assembling a delightful repertoire Garland herself might sing today. The show includes show stoppers by John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig) and even Amy Winehouse! Her show has been called "a subtle masterpiece of parody and homage" by the New York Times. Champagne has an uncanny way with the character Judy Garland. Quite simply, Connie has a unique gift to bring the Garland character and voice to life like no other, & although Judy is gone, Connie is here to rock the house in the spirit of Stonewall! KRON TV's Jan Wahl put it best, "Connie celebrates Judy Garland like no other." Don't miss this fabulous show! When: Jun 24, 2009 Original Price: $35.00

What Mama Said About Down There
Our Little Theatre 287 Ellis btw Mason and Taylor SF
Hairy palms, blindness, trips to hell: Adults will tell children any number of messed-up lies to keep them in line, especially when it comes to sex. Liberian comedian Sia Amma's new play What Mama Said About "Down There" investigates the largely misguided tales mothers share with daughters. The one-woman show's many characters reveal that it's difficult for moms to talk to their girls about the facts of life no matter who (or where) they are. As much as daughters must think their mothers have trouble loosening up and telling the truth because they're African, British, Jewish, Latina, Asian, or of any other culture (Amma includes "Lesbian" and "Valley Girl" on the list), it turns out that everyone's doing it, as the kids say. Chicago By Kander, Ebb and Fosse Directed by C. Michael Traw When Saratoga Drama Group changed its name (which it's had since 1969) to South Bay Musical Theatre recently, one of the amusing reasons it gave was something along the lines of "the name was misleading because we only produce musicals." It may have taken the company 40 years to rectify the situation, but it's debuting its new name in a big way with a production of Chicago. And, despite Traw's many years of directing in the Bay Area, it'll be his first shot at Chicago, which he's "always wanted to direct" because he loves "the satire of the piece." If you missed the revival and/or haven't gotten your fix from the film (or even if you have), check out this intimate production at Saratoga Civic Theatre. -Karen McKevitt Saratoga Civic Theatre, 13777 Fruitvale Ave., Saratoga. May 16-June 6. Tickets are $13.50-30. Call (408) 266-4734, or visit southbaymusicaltheatre.com.

Event: Yes They Are! Meeting and Greeting the Queerest of the Gods "A Ritual Theater Performance at the Crossroads of Spirituality and Sexuality" Host: The Circle of Dionysos Start Time: Saturday, June 13 at 7:00pm End Time: Saturday, June 13 at 9:00pm First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco Throughout history, members of what is known today as the GLBTIQQ community held important positions in the priesthoods of various deities the world over. However, current traditions that emphasize ”fertile” relationships between Goddess and God and idealize a heterosexual “Great Rite” can relegate our experiences and sensibilities to the sidelines. But our very existence proves that there are purposes in life as important as procreation, and every purpose in life is represented by its own set of deities. Those of us, both women and men, who have formed or joined GLBTIQQ specific circles often find unexpected allies in our explorations of the world’s various pantheons. In this theatrical ritual, we’d like you to meet them. This performance includes sexually explicit material and may not be suitable for all age groups.

teaching publicly at the Ali Akbar College until just weeks ago, and taught
music at home until the day he died.
The obituaries throughout India and the rest of the world have rightly stressed that Khansahib was a musical genius of the stature of Beethoven and Mozart. However, those of us in the Bay Area are especially grateful for another of his great accomplishments. This was not something he directly created, but rather something that he inspired in others. Students of Indian music came to the Bay area solely because he was here, from Japan,
South America, Europe, even India itself. Other great Indian teachers followed, and the result was a community devoted to classical Indian culture that deeply influenced the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. The early issues of India Currents were devoted almost entirely to calendar
listings of concerts by these students and teachers, and Khansahib remained the central inspiration of that community for decades. He was admired and
loved, and will be greatly missed.                                               Khansahib was famous for his performances at the world greatest concert halls, and for his many recordings. Eight months of every year, however, he gave himself entirely to his students. We were constantly
inspired by Khansahib¹s example of artistic dedication and compassionate patience, and  anyone who tried to master the profound intricacies of his lessons was forever changed by that experience. These lessons contained centuries of tradition seamlessly interwoven with his own unique genius. No one learned how to play them as well as he did, but everyone learned how to listen, and shared their enthusiasm with friends, and friends of friends.
The result was an audience for Hindustani music which was unmatched for both ethnic diversity and devotion to artistic excellence. It is both heartbreaking and inspiring to realize that this community can and must now go on without him.
The memorial service and burial was held at Mt. Tamalpais Cemetery Sunday, June 21st at noon. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Ali Akbar College of Music (AACM) for the Ali Akbar Khan Library.
