About Max Dashu
Forty years ago, Max Dashu
founded the Suppressed Histories Archives to research global women's
history, mother-right, patriarchy, and the origins of domination. She
has built a unique collection of over 15,000 slides and 100 visual
presentations on female heritages internationally. Her research
foregrounds the missing center of women and indigenous peoples passed
over in "classic" history. She scoured libraries for
evidence of female leadership and other patterns that challenged the
claimed universality of male (and white) domination.
Studying the archaeological
record, Dashu saw that women loom large in neolithic iconography. She
found that spiritual leadership has been a major sphere of power for
women, sometimes even in societies where men dominate. Her shows on
female shamans, priestesses, and drummers break new ground in
restoring awareness of female spiritual leadership. She has also done
extensive research on how this power has been repressed, and is about
to publish her multi-volume Secret History of the Witches on
the sexual politics of the European witch hunts
Dashu has presented hundreds of
slide talks at universities, women's spaces, community centers,
schools, libraries, prisons, galleries, museums, festivals, and
conferences. She created the dvd Women's Power in Global Perspective,
and several posters, including Female Icons, Ancestral Mothers,
showing the planetary scope of ancient female figurines.
