4th of July concert with Tempest - www.tempestmusic.com - In 1776 the US made the ill-advised decision to declare independence from Britain.  Just think how great America would be today were it still under British rule and its citizens all subjects of the Queen. To help lift you spirits on the anniversary of this fateful day, Tempest will be playing a special 4th of July show on the deck of the USS Hornet in Alameda. Mandaza Kandemwa, Zimbabwean Elder and Traditional Healer
will be back in the Bay Area from August 29th to Sept 4th
for private healing sessions and community healing rituals.
Bay Area Daré will again host Mandaza during his 8th visit to North America.  There will be public gatherings, community healing rituals and private appointments through which you can experience Mandaza's traditional healing and peacemaking.
There will be both private sessions and public events. Many of which will be fundraisers to sustain Mandaza's ceremonial healing and council work in Zimbabwe.  No one will be turned away for lack of funds. We will work out what we must, to do the work that Spirit guides us to do together.
PLEASE HELP US SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT MANDAZA'S VISIT by circulating this information your communities and networks.

About the Bay Area DARE' ----------

Inspiration for DARE came from Zimbabwe, where indigenous healer Mandaza Kandemwa was instructed through vision to collaborate with other healers across the world. DARE was brought to North America through the meeting of Mandaza with writer Deena Metzger and poet and nganga Michael Ortiz Hill. Through their shared work  Elenna Rubin Goodman hosted the first gathering of DARE in the Bay Area in January, 2002.

Daré meets every month on the Sunday closest to the full moon from 12:00 to 7:00 PM in Oakland, CA . All are welcome.

The Sonoma County Pagan Network welcomes Gus diZerega, a Gardnerian Elder with 25 years practice, including six years close study with a Brazilian shaman. He has been selected as the first Pagan blogger on Beliefnet: http://blog.beliefnet.com/apagansblog/.  This topic is of growing interest in our community in having a formal clergy and seminaries.  These institutions and practices are rooted in the Christian tradition.  They are based on very different models of spirituality and our relation to it. We know from the past that religions such as Christianity and Islam have been powerfully impacted by the cultures where they rose - and often not for the better. (For example, status of women.) How might we try and minimize the risk? Where:Luther Burbanks Arts and Garden Center, 2050 Yulupa Ave., Santa Rosa CA

In the theme of EAPoe
Our high school English teacher meant well.
hit upon to make Poe “come alive” by having the class split into sopranos and baritones and spontaneously recite his worst poem, glee-club style.

The following is a true story.

Once upon a school-day dreary, while I nodded, vague and weary,
Wond’ring at the dull, monotonous verse that English class compels,
While I sat there, no harm doing, doodles on my desk construing,
Suddenly some girl came shooing me across the room with yells,
Growling, squawking, shushing, shooing all across the room with yells;
“Hey!” I muttered; “What the hell’s–”

Little did I know what dire circumstances loomed, or why, or
Whether I should scowl or sigh, or what ill such tumult foretells;
Late I rued my inattention, and despaired of intervention
When I fathomed what unmentionable noise so loudly wells –
What a monstrous travesty of sound so sinisterly wells:
Choral reading of “The Bells”!

For it’s “bells”, and “bells” it echoes, till the room seems filled with geckos
Teeming, screaming out the morbid music of a thousand hells –
Burrowing into the cortex, roiling in a noisome vortex,
Casting iambs long and short ex tempore in seasick swells,
Sounding grunts and cackles like a coven’s dark incanted spells –
Such anarchy was “The Bells”.

“Never,” thought I, “breath’d such evil, since the wilderness primeval!
Even tortures medieval this bleak exercise excels!
Though upon the rack they rend you, low above the fire suspend you,
Neither it nor pit nor pendulum such grueling torment tells –
Never such excruciating lamentation as retells
-Choral reading of ‘The Bells’.”

Ghastly voices still are singing; in my ears continue ringing
Horrid tintinnabulations which no asp’rin pill dispels;
Through my brain those verses bubble, ev’ry syllable redoubled,
My redoubt reduced to rubble while that threnody still knells –
Rubble out of which is built the cell in which my soul now dwells,
In the Tower of “The Bells”.

Friends,

This Friday night (Aug. 28), Euphonia will perform at a new (for us) East Bay venue: 33 Revolutions Record Shop & Cafe in El Cerrito. This is a cool spot, featuring fresh organic foods (sandwiches, salads, soups) and desserts but also wine and beer on tap, plus very good coffee. And this is a real record store, too: Bring your old vinyl to sell or trade, or prowl the bins for something to take home. The collection is geared toward jazz and rock and roll.

Euphonia will be serving up its blend of trad and modern folk songs, swirled with tune flavors from around Europe and North America. Details below.

We'd love to see you there!

Just to keep you in the loop, as the hangman put it, about my ongoing monthly social "club." Or is it a jazz club?  Cheers,  Ken
Noted jazz reedsman Philip Greenlief, with his trio 'Citti di Vitti' (after Monica Vitti of Antonioni fame) will be playing, as the jazz parties switch from first to second Sundays of the month--Sunday, July 12, 2-5 p. m. at Cafe Royale, 800 Post at Leavenworth.
As always, requesting--& "request" the operant word; no-one turned away--$5 or more for the band, which is subsidized through your kindness. We're honored to have Philip play for us--please come early! --and bring friends ...
For those who haven't been, Cafe Royale is low-key, full of natural light, & features reasonably-priced beer & wine, sake & soju, coffee, tea, soft drinks & snacks. You can order out for food; some revelers bring dishes & snacks to share. Families are welcome.
There's often parking on the street, especially early on. If not, the nearest garage is uphill, north a block & a half up Leavenworth, between Sutter & Bush--best rates start at 3 hours, so perfect for the length of the party.
If you're coming from the north, take a left on Post off Van Ness; it's 4 blocks. From the south or east, the Van Ness exit is good, cross Market, right at Post.
From BART: exit to the north at Montgomery St.--Post starts at Montgomery & Market--a pleasant 8-block walk. (From Powell BART, up Powell & left on Post at Union Square; from Civic Center, north on Hyde to Post, then right to Post & Leavenworth--but Montgomery's best on foot!)
The 27 Bryant crosses Post at Leavenworth going north from the Mission & SOMA, south at Jones. The 38 Geary crosses Leavenworth westbound; eastbound, at O'Farrell.
See you there!  - KEN BULLOCK

In the traditional music world, people say John Doyle is the best Irish guitarist to come along in many years – maybe the best ever. There’s no doubt he’s one reason the guitar has become an important instrument in Irish music, where it was once almost nonexistent.
http://www.johndoylemusic.com/
John has toured with, produced or played on dozens of albums, with top fiddlers Eileen Ivers and Liz Carroll, and English folk legend Linda Thompson, Kate Rusby, Tim O'Brien, Alison Brown, Maura O'Connell and nearly everyone in the world of Irish music. He’s created a style that combines rhythm and melody in a way that pleases fans of traditional music, jazz and even rock n’ roll. In a review of the band Solas, (of which he was a founding member) one critic said it seemed superfluous to have a drummer on stage while Doyle cranked out one rhythmic change after another on his guitar. His debut solo album, Evening Comes Early (Shanachie Records, 2002) showcased his singing talents for the first time and his follow-up recording, Wayward Son (Compass Records) has him now winning accolades as singer extraordinaire and a fine tunesmith to boot.  John is probably the busiest man in Irish music as his powerful talents have him at the top of a lot of fellow musician's studio wish lists.  John is currently music director and guitarist with Joan Baez.

This is an occasion for *social* morris dancing, with an aim towards creating a Saturday-night-
at-the-ale pick-up dancing.  No kit, no busses, no skits, just music and dance.  Go crazy!  Bring bells, instruments, hankies, (I will have some sticks, but you can bring those too), humor, and energy.  You can bring food and drink to share. Do as thou wilt. Price: I pay $150 for the hall, which is the only out-of-pocket cost.  You are invited to make donations to help me pick up the cost.  If you are wondering how much is appropriate, a quick head-count and a little math will give you guidance.  If you are feeling broke, don't sweat it; if you are feeling flush, go a little over.-- Joshua

SAY EVERYTHING:

How Blogging Began, What It’s Becoming, and Why It Matters

Over the last dozen years, while everyone was arguing about blogging, the new medium came into its own. What started as the passion of a handful of geeky pioneers evolved into the pursuit of millions. That is the story Scott Rosenberg tells.

SAY EVERYTHING chronicles blogging’s unplanned rise and improbable triumph, tracing its impact on politics, business, the media, and our personal lives. What blogging has become, Rosenberg says, is a new kind of public sphere -- one in which we can think out loud together.

He's Gay. He's Asian. He's coming of age in Lettucetown, aka Salinas. If that’s not bad enough, he's got a crush on a hick. If that’s not bad enough, his friends think fun is blowing up a field of lettuce. If that’s not bad enough, he has to sneak to the highschool bathroom to buy drugs and Donna Summer records. Adolescence! It's fun, it's lies. In Lettucetown.

Another Jazz Party

Yet another Second Sunday is rolling around, & another Jazz Party at Cafe Royale, 2-5 p. m. with the Tony Passarell Quartet, with tenor & alto sax, Tony doubling on piano.
Last month, there was a good turnout--& great response--for Phillip Greenlief & Citta di Vitti, who Tony booked for us. Great music, drawn from Italian films. Phillip says he'll be back Sept. 13 with his other group, The Lost Trio.
I ask $5, but anything helps; it's just a request, everybody's welcome--& give any extra over the draw to the band. It's their only pay. Last month was the first time in seven parties, I think, that what was collected broke even with the draw.
For those who haven't  gone before: Cafe Royale, 800 Post St. @ Leavenworth, , family friendly,  lots of natural light, reasonably priced: drinks ... some snacks. Food can be brought in (sometimes people bring dishes to share) or ordered out. Another band, sponsored by the Cafe, comes on later (usually at 6, but at 7 this time).
From East or South Bay, take Van Ness to Post, turn right (4 blocks); from the North, left on Post off Van Ness. There's often parking on the street; up (north) on Leavenworth, State Garage, between Sutter & Bush (1 1/2 blocks from the Cafe), there're reasonable rates for 3 hours & more.
From BART (my route) walk 8 blocks up Post (12-15 minutes or so,) from the Montgomery BART station, where Post & Montgomery begin at Market. From the Mission & Market at Powell BART, the #27 Muni bus crosses Post at Leavenworth northbound; southbound at Jones.
Hope to see you there! Or in Sept. ...
