Volunteering for the General Auditions is one of the best ways to get the inside scoop without needing to actually get up on stage. As a volunteer, we guarantee that you'll spend at least half the time in the theatre, watching the auditions and getting the auditor's perspective, which is a far cry from the world of the auditioner on stage. If you're auditioning yourself or think you may want to, volunteering will give you the chance to scope out the scene and pick up a few pointers from watching others audition, which is a great way to bolster your confidence. But besides all that, it's really fun! We do not assign job duties in advance, but possible jobs include sorting headshots, distributing headshots, timekeeping, traffic control, video assistant, concessions, etc. Each session is about 4 hours in length and we do require at least one entire shift, though if you want to do multiple shifts, that's great, too! We usually run out of volunteer slots, so sign up now! The 6 shifts are as follows:
Saturday, January 31, 8:30AM-1PM
Saturday, January 31, 1:30-5PM
Sunday, February 1, 8:30AM-1PM
Sunday February 1, 1:30-5:30PM
Monday February 2**, 8:30AM-1PM
Monday February 2**, 1:30-5:30PM
**Equity day

E-mail Kendra at kendra@theatrebayarea.org to reserve your spot. If you want to wait until you hear back about scheduling, e-mail now and you'll be put on a "wait-and-see" list.

Theatre Library Association Call for Papers
“PLAYING” THE PILGRIM: SCHOLARS, COLLECTIONS, AND ARCHIVAL DESTINATIONS
Please submit one-page Proposal by February 1, 2009 American Society for Theatre Research Theatre Library Association  November 11-15, 2009 San Juan, Puerto Rico Colleen Reilly  Chair, TLA Plenary  Arts Library, Yale University Email: colleen.reilly@yale.edu Theatre, Performance, and DestiNation Performing arts archives and special collections are a destination for artifacts and ephemera – as well as for the artists and scholars who experience them. The research process is a journey undertaken for diverse purposes and outcomes. This panel poses an investigation of the kind of “play” that occurs between archive and destination, research and journey, and the scholar-pilgrim-voyeur.
Proposals may consider the following questions:
• How does a performance undertake the journey from ephemeral cultural expression to tangible archival evidence? How do archives and special collections serve as destinations for performances?
• What is involved when a performing arts archive or collection travels from its place of origin to a new repository, or across repositories in different geopolitical regions? What does it mean for a collection to come “home?”
• What challenges are presented to archives and special collections when theatre itself “travels” (as when it tours), becoming, in effect, a moveable destination?
• How does research travel to archives and special collections negotiate the tension between pilgrimage and voyeuristic consumption? In what ways does research travel become performative?
• How do libraries and archives participate as sites of privileged viewing and local experience? How do special collections engage issues of privacy or stage themselves to an audience?
• Are theatre archives and special collections themselves an “island?” How do they reflect or reinvent “island culture?” Are they tied to the mainland of performance practices or archival methodologies? How do theatre archives and performing arts collections “travel” across these boundaries?

Just in time for the holidays, Theatre Bay Area's looking to give away $250 in cash--and all you have to do to get entered to win it is take a short survey we're conducting! This survey, which should take you about 15 minutes, will help us to understand how well we're doing with our programming, and what our members value most from us. We'd really love for you to take a look--and please pass on this link to anyone else in your group of friends, staff, board, etc. as well. Everyone who completes a survey is eligible to win $250 in cash--not bad for 15 minutes of your time. You must take the survey before December 30 to be entered!
