Being tall is an advantage, especially in business. People will always remember you. And if you're in a crowd, you'll always have some clean air to breathe.( editor's note- she was over 6 feet.)

On the table for February 2010:

posted ‎‎Aug 15, 2009 11:23 AM‎‎ by Lezlie Kinyon   [ updated ‎‎Oct 4, 2009 10:13 AM‎‎ ]

Proposal for Imbolc, 1st Tuesday in February. A ritual performance in collaboration with Spiral Path/Gateway and TSCP:

Art by Denita Benyshek
Goddess Cycle: A Ritual of Renewal

First Meeting: Nov 2 Costumers: Oct 11

Words (libretto) by Ashes of Roses (Lezlie Kinyon) musical composition and arrangement by Lauren Hotchkiss

Contact: Lezlie doclezlie_at_gmail.com or (music) Lauren Laurhot_at_gmail.com

Roles open: Iris, The Suplicant, Athene/Atane, (the African Athena), The Forest God, Quarter Priests & Priestesses (chorus)

Why TSCP? This event comes under the "...and Circle" mandate for TSCP events. It might also be possible to take this piece to a festival.

Direction: This is a ritual, so we don't need an official stage director. Lauren will do music direction.

Who's involved now?  Lezlie, Lauren, Herb de Grasse, Ren Monson (who facilitate this Gateway Circle as Hp & HPs), Hallie Frazer has been casted as Spider Woman, Rose Shannon as The Queen of Heaven, and Diana Rowan as Calypso.
Clarice Schwartz, Rose Shannon, and Lezlie Kinyon design and costuming; Denita Benyshek, art; So Many others have contacted us since the "call" went out 2 weeks ago that a "sing along" audition of sorts will happen in order to sort out the singing roles in November - we are honored!

Audience: Gateway is an open circle.

Rehearsal space: Ideas and offers of FREE space(s) to rehearse in are needed ASAP! We can meet initially and do a couple rehearsals at Lezlie's house on Sunday afternoons. We did speak with Herb & Ren about rehearsing a couple times at BFUU - but, no response. (It's pretty unlikely without more $$ being involved.)

Time line:

  • Lauren & Lezlie: August to December: complete script & music.
  • Schedule recording time - after ritual. (in conjunction with X'pressions College)
  • Casting: on-going until roles are filled - the Goddesses should all be chosen by New Year's Day.
  • January: Learn music under Lauren's direction & everyone memorizes her part.
  • Mid-Late January: ritualists (everyone in the ritual) meet to create & run through the ritual. (In my experience, this generally takes 4-5 meetings.)
People Needed: (The casting call should go out ASAP) One Priest as "The Forest God". 3 or 4 priestesses who sing to portray Goddesses (Spider Woman, Iris, Calypso, Atane, Medea, The Queen of Heaven, Supplicant, are the main ones). Instrumentalists (as things develop this will become clear), others as needed.  A costumer might be a good idea - I'll ask a couple TSCPers - I can also talk to Kay about masks...

Stuff needed: Materials for distributing script and sheet/charted music. Natural items (grain, eggs, flowers, leaves, etc.) to make a labyrinth & time to set it up early in the day. Candles, basin for water, mirror. Cakes and Ale.

Budget-
  • Venue: Spiral Path rents the Hall at BFUU, this will be a regular ritual date for them.
  • Herb says Spiral Path will help reimburse us for materials up to $50 - as this is a collaboration, there are details yet to worked out.
  • Mask supplies as needed (will speak with Kay)
  • About $20. for Cakes & Ale supplies (or, cookies & juice... but, cakes & Ale sounds so much more Witchy...)
  • Other: We have about $500-$1000 worth of supplies for costuming and other things available for use in plays - so there is no need to purchase anything further at this time.
  • Liability: Spiral Path carries liability.

posted ‎‎Jul 23, 2009 8:28 AM‎‎ by Lezlie Kinyon

So sorry to report that there will me no play for Yule this year - The design and creative team will be focusing on 2010 and using the next 14 months to develop something very special ... stay tuned for updates. We are afraid that the "economic downturn" has affected us and our ability to create ... the Google planning list is open and can be found at: http://groups.google.com/group/MummingforYule

All Mummers: In Goode Company - Yule project

posted ‎‎Feb 1, 2009 11:53 AM‎‎ by Lezlie Kinyon   [ updated ‎‎Aug 15, 2009 11:23 AM‎‎ ]

All Mummers,  UPDATE:

The Albany Veteran's Memorial Hall has been reserved for this production for December 2010. this venue is a beautiful example of pre-1930 Bay Area architecture. There will be many design and especially sound and lighting needs to be worked out over the next 14 months of planning. Please contact us to discuss how you can help.

The Starlight Circle Players - for better or worse - will be involved in the creation of a Mummer's Play for Yule for 2010 We have agreed in principle to make this year's production as a collaboration between TSCP and MAIA.  (For those of you interested in working with my play, The Buried Moon, this will be a nice "foretaste".) We tried to do this last
winter, but due to a series of unforeseeable and completely devastating life threatening crises, we were unable to mount a successful production.  (although Lauren has promised us a ballad). You will find music files, art, notes and photos, a synopsis, and a cast list from last year's play in the "Files" section of this site:
http://groups.google.com/group/MummingforYule  More info will found be at: www.starlightcircleplayers.com.
FUNDRAISING!!!!
In order to make this play successful - please send this information to everyone you know and encourage them to do the same  --  Yesterday, a friend handed me $20 dollars to start fund raising for our Yule play.  See what you can do as well, I'm open to any an ll suggestions, including  bake sale on a street corner ... and, we'll have a  successful production. Thanks - Lezlie

Announcement: The in house Mummer's/folk play ensemble, "In Goode Companie" located  in Berkeley, California - for better or worse - will be involved in the creation of a Mummer's Play for Yule for 2010.  Our vision is for a musically rich, updated, edgy, and Pagan take on this ancient custom. It will be necessary to collaborate with a longsword dance troupe and there is room for Morris and/or Molly. There is a Google group to discuss mumming, mummers, and this play at

http://groups.google.com/group/MummingforYule
A script and music are under development. There will be room for many instrumentalists and actors, most roles are singing. The roles are archetypal figures from myth: Holly & Oak Kings, Summer & Winter's Queen, Spring's Maiden, The Quack Doctor, "Betty", The Fool, and Father Christmas. The music is "New Celtic" - rhythmic, somewhat challenging, acoustic & folk-based.
We would invite all interest persons to contact TSCP at starlightcircleplayers@yahoo.com or doclezlie_at_gmail.com. Musicians: Lauren at laurhot_at_gmail.com. Or- to subscribe to the Google group.  Note: We do not, at this time, plan to take this play to any festivals, although, with enough energy behind the project, it can be done.  *Directors*, mask makers, costumers and other theatre artists are invited to discuss this play.
Hallie Frazer has agreed- in principal - to direct this play
Lauren Hotchkiss has agree to be music director.
Matthew Carauddo, FFE licensed instructor, has agreed to fight direction
Ric Goldman has (preliminary & provisionally) has agreed to be choreographer & dance master.
Lezlie Kinyon has agreed to work as art director with artists and designers. Clarice Schwartz, Rose Shannon, and Lezlie will work in costuming.

A Midwinter Tale: In the Court of the Holly King

Synopsis: “What is a myth? The dictionary definition of a myth would be stories about gods.... What is a god? A god is a personification of a motivating power or value system that functions in human life and in the universe -- the powers of your own body and of nature. The myths are metaphorical of spiritual potentiality in the human being, and the same powers that animate our life animate the life of the world...” Joseph Campbell, The Power of Myth

We ... need to reawaken something very old ... our understanding of Earth wisdom. We need to accept the invitation to the dance -- the dance of unity of humans, plants, the Earth.” Bill Devall and George Sessions, Deep Ecology

A Midwinter Tale: In the Court of the Holly King is the oldest tale. The story you’ve known before you were born. When the darkest night of winter is upon us, the Kings of Holly and Oak meet in a place not of this place, a time not of this time when the doors that let magic in are open.

Cast: Lucy, The Child of Light brings her lantern into a dark wood, where a Deer Maiden opens the doors of magic. A Hunter is lost, finding his way to the Court of the Holly King, it’s known by his token (a Magic Ring) that the yearly duel between the waxing and waning year will be fought – A mystery play, a romp, a night of frivolity and feasting – ritual theatre at it’s best. We will use dance, music, and – of course – drama to tell this tale at Midwinter. These are all singing roles. (Subject to change.) Lucy, The Child of Light- a child under 10. She is the harbinger of the waxing light. Father Christmasthe Welcomed and beloved visitor of the Season. Deer Maiden –, she is the Leanannan Sidhi, a skogsfru, Bonga Maiden – a graceful a faery - a Moon Maiden of the deep forest: she opens the doors to let magic in. Sometimes youthfully innocent, sometimes a dark seductress. The inspiration of poets in Europe and America alike, you can seek her forever and never catch her. But – if you are still … and … silent, in a deep place of the forest, she is there, she has always been there. Holly: - The King of the Waning Year – stately, a bit pompous, a little white in his hair, but as merry as the next cup of ale. Oak: - The King of the Waxing Year – youthful and energetic. A bit of Robyn i’ the Hode1, a little bit of Jack – he arrives from the Age of Romance and Chivalry bearing his sword and Heroic Profile. Some fight experience is helpful for these roles. (Please note: be prepared to work with the fight director outside of rehearsal time.) Thorn: Winter's Queen. The beauty of icy branches against a pale sky promising snow, the welcoming cup, the hearthfire. The hush of a snowy path, the violence of a winter’s storm: These are her mysteries Rose: Summer's Queen-in-the-Underworld (pomegranates, faded roses, and black lace) The Fool: a wise fool, a trickster, a nonesuch, a nonpareil - but, a fool none-the-less (Not a clown or joker) Betty: A real woman who likes to swing! (Played by a man.) Erasmus Brown, Q.D. (Quack Doctor): The best Quack in this here town! Dance team (right now, Spot on Sword from Marin has shown interest). Musicians: Please contact Lauren Hotchkiss, music director at: laurhot@gmail.com. Needed: percussion, penny whistle, strings, acoustic folk instruments of all kinds are welcome and some electric are OK.

1 “A Gest of Robyn Hode” Child Ballad 117: http://www.lib.rochester.edu/camelot/teams/gest.htm

"Yes, for God," then sayd Robyn,

"Or elles I were a fole:

Another day ye wyll me clothe,

I trowe, ayenst the Yole."

Kay Pannell  Mustering Back, A Soldier’s Sacred Rite

Kay will be organizing pre-production meetings In January, 2009.
Contact: kay_pannell@hotmail.com

Sacred Play/Ritual Theater: This is a ritual that has theater elements. This is intended to be a purification rite for combat veterans, to allow returning vets to be given the space and time to re-adjust their minds, spirits, and emotions. The ritual allows them to transition out of the battlefield “head space” and back into the civilian world. There is a theater presentation at the beginning, which sets the stage for their journey. They will be taken through different rooms to undergo specific ritual purifications at each area. The venue will be the USS Hornet, and they will be taken through the “Underworld” of the ships passages and rooms to each purification spot. At the end, they re-immerge into a banquet hall.
