Principal's Message

  • May 28, 2012
Hello Stanley Families- Happy Memorial Day-

A quick reminder for everyone as there are many more end-of-year activities approaching-the other day a Stanley student was hit by a motorist  on his way to school.  While the student was wearing a helmet, they were riding their bike through a crosswalk, and luckily did not sustain any serious injuries.  We understand that the traffic around campus can be busy, and during drop off and pick up times there is a large amount of foot and bike traffic along with cars.  If you drive, please take some extra time and be aware of our students who are traveling around your car.  Also, please remind your kids that they need to walk their bikes through the crosswalks and obey all traffic rules.

In our continuing effort to educate students about digital citizenship and safety, we will be having presentations this week from an Officer from the Piedmont Police Dept. who also works as an expert with student cyber-safety.

I am looking forward to seeing many of you in the next few weeks for events like our end-of-year bar-b-cues, along with Jazz Cafe and Stanley Promotion.  For more information about these events please check our Wildcat Weekly or the Stanley Website.

Thanks again for your continued support!

  • 2012 Guidelines for 8th Grade Promotion Ceremony Speeches
STANLEY MIDDLE SCHOOL GUIDELINES FOR 8TH GRADE PROMOTION CEREMONY SPEECHES

Each year Stanley eighth grade students are invited and encouraged to participate in their promotion ceremony by addressing fellow students and families at the event.  This evening brings closure to an important part of their educational journey.

Students who have the opportunity to read their speech at this event are selected on the basis of the content of their writing and on the delivery of their speech.  In their speeches, students frequently reflect upon their first days at Stanley, upon the special events, school dances, extra-curricular activities, and crunch times in preparing for homework assignments or tests.  Students may also recognize how much they have grown physically, socially, and emotionally during their Stanley years.  Friendships in the middle school are another possible focal point in student speeches.  Please avoid mentioning individual teachers’ or friends’ names.

If you think that you would like the opportunity to move forward in the audition process, kindly review the procedures outlined below:

    • 5/04/12                        Report to the Multiuse Room at lunch to meet with Ms. McShane and learn about the speech process.
    • 5/04/12-5/14/12           Sign the “Intent to Participate” clipboard in the office.  Work on your speech.
    • 5/14/12                        Printed, double-spaced, typed draft of speech due to Ms. Shaw in the school office by 4:00 pm. (Speeches may be no longer than two minutes.)
    • 5/18/12                        Notification of students making the paper screening.  Finalists’ names will be posted in the office windows after school.
    • 5/18/12-5/28/12           Practice your speech; it does not have to be memorized.
    • 5/29/12                        Report to Mr. Schrag’s office for auditions immediately after school.  You will be called in one at a time to present your speech.
    • 5/30/12                        Notification of 8th Grade Promotion Ceremony Speakers.

Based upon speech content and oral presentation, a committee of teachers and administrators will choose two or three speakers for the event.

Good luck to all of you and thank you for your interest.

  • Independent Study
Each time your child misses school for any reason (sick, vacation, others) the Lafayette School District loses $44 per day in revenues from the state. Attendance in school is best for your child’s education. If your child is ill, keep him/her home until well enough to return to school. If you must take your child on a trip for 5 days or more, ask your school to provide him with an Independent Study packet (please give the school at least 2 weeks’ notice for an Independent Study request) to help him keep up with his studies while gone. Doing so is a WIN-WIN scenario. Your child keeps pace with his classes and is considered PRESENT on those days (NOT ABSENT) for State funding purposes. However, for absences less than five days or absences greater than 5 days without a completed Independent Study, your child misses invaluable instruction time and the state withholds funding from the District at $44/day. The District strongly recommends that trips and vacations be scheduled during non-school days.

This is BEST, firstly, for your children, our students and secondly, for the District especially amidst persistent State funding cuts.

PTA President's Message

  • May 28, 2012
    Dear Stanley Parents,

Can you believe our school year is almost done? Memorial Day weekend is like seeing the finish line at the end of a school year marathon, as far as I’m concerned.

Full disclosure – I do not come from a family of proud veterans. Instead I come from a long line of peace-loving fools much like myself. The only uncles I remember even being eligible for military service were conscientious objectors of the Vietnam War and moved to Canada for a year to escape the dreaded draft. As a result, I know next-to-nothing about proper Memorial Day flag etiquette nor about how to properly decorate an honored veteran’s grave. To me, Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer and the day to make and share pasta, potato and jell-o salads with friends while lounging in lawn chairs and watching the menfolk try to show off their BBQ skills. So, I have to honor our veterans in a different way…

Every time I drive by the Lafayette hill with the white Crosses, Stars of David, Islamic Crescents and other symbols, I say to my kids, “OK… so what is the number up to now? Wow! Remember when we saw it pass 4,000? 5,000? Can you even think about how many mothers have cried over those sons and daughters that aren’t here anymore? Just think about all those sad families…” This has been a great starting point for some interesting discussions about stereotyping, war, grief, and other things. I want them to learn tolerance, patience and love… not prejudice, fear, and disdain.

But I’ve also told them that the men and women who died did so because they believed in something greater than themselves. They believed that their sacrifice would ultimately make the world a better place, and that is truly honor indeed.

My kids call me a hippy, but I consider myself a pacifist. I believe that love is the most powerful emotion that humans can possess and use. I believe that love for other people can only bring about good things and will ultimately transform our world from the inside out. I’ve also told them that I don’t know how we can teach love when we are pointing guns at others. For a decade, we all have lived in an atmosphere of constant but far-away war. Please take a moment to consider those that have given so much to make things better. Let’s not be jaded and hardened to the pain that so many other military families are feeling. Even this peace-loving, hippy PTA President will do the same. President Obama said today, “After a decade under the dark clouds of war, we can see the light of a new day on the horizon.” Oh, please let that be true – for all of us.

Enjoy this last full week of school. We are in the home stretch, my friends!

    Best,

    Becky Kenney
