There are many factors that should affect your decision, and this page is for those of you who just want an idea of how to go about weighing some potential factors in general. If you have a specific situation not covered in this website, you should definitely go ask a Residential Deans or Housing Front Desk Coordinator who will assist you. Some Potential Influencing Factors: - Your class year
- If you're going abroad next year
- Other plans for the future
Your class year- If you are a rising freshman, you can only choose Tier 2 or 3, so your choices are quite limited. It is important to note though, that even if you get into a good dormitory, the in-class house operates in order by seniority, so you some of you might want to hold off on all the good tiers until junior and senior year.
- If you are a rising sophomore or junior, you will get first pick for the rooms in the in-house draw if you can get into a dormitory. Of course, if your draw number is very bad, you will be unassigned, and you will have almost no pick in choice of rooms.
- If you are a fifth year coterm student, then you are probably out of guarantee years, so you will have to draw as Tier 4, which is for unguaranteed students. However, given the recent housing crunch, you do not have a very good chance at housing, so you should probably live off-campus and find your own.
If you're going abroad next... - AUTUMN, then you have to make a judgement call on how important those two quarters you spend on campus are. If they are, you should choose a better tier. However, since you are still applying from the waiting list, you may not necessarily get into the residences you normally would with your draw number.
- WINTER, then you need to realize that your residence in the fall and spring will probably be different. Thus, you may want to use up your bad tiers during this year.
- SPRING, then this is another judgement call. It depends on how important those first two quarters are to you.
Other plans for the future- If you want to be a dormitory staff (RA, FA, PHE, etc) at one point, that will use up your Tier 3. Since you can only staff when you are a junior or senior, you might want to use a good tier during your sophomore year
- If you plan on taking a quarter or more off, that should affect your decision as well
Bottom Line: You should make sure you balance out the pros and cons of using good tiers early on, and leaving them until your later years. |
