There are several different types of room on campus, each with its pros and cons. While there is a stereotypical "ranking" of good rooms to bad rooms, it all depends on personal taste. For example, even though the stereotypical "best" type of room is a single, many people find it too boring to live in a small room all by themselves. So before you take these rumors and stereotypes to heart, make sure you preview these rooms before you decide which ones you want. Singles This means that you have an entire room all to yourself. The size various from dorm to dorm, but are about 2/3 the size of a 1-room double. These are in very high demand, especially from upperclassmen. Most dorms have a handful of these, but they are usually the first to go in the in-house draw. 1-Room Doubles This is probably the most common type of room out of all. It is one room shared by two people. Although these are not great due to the lack of privacy, some of them can be various spacious. Usually, the open space in a 1-room double is much larger than each of the rooms in a 2-room double. Sure, the 2-room doubles have more total open space, but 1-room doubles usually have more contiguous open space, giving them a slightly more spacious appearance. 2-Room Doubles These are considered the "luxury" rooms, since you can have a lot more storage room. You also have the added privacy of a second room. This is often useful if you have friends over and your roommate needs to change. In a 1-room double, you would have to ask everybody to leave, but with a 2-room double, your roommate could just go into the other room for privacy. 1-Room Triples, 2-Room Triples, 3-Room Triples The quality of these rooms really depends on which residence it's located in. However, most 1-room triples are very spacious, which makes for a great living and socializing space. However, like the 1-room doubles, you do not have the privacy that you usually would with a 2-room configuration. 2-room triples are similar to 1-room doubles. 3-room triples tend to feel quite cramped because the rooms are only large enough for one person's belongings. 2-Room Quads There are only a handful of these throughout campus, but these tend to be very roomy. Their size is comparable to two one-room doubles put together. Some people have configured these rooms very creatively, especially due to the large amount of furniture available to arrange. Some people have even considered making one of their two rooms a mini-theater! |
