The International Development Careers Group met with Joel Segre on Sunday, October 25th, to hear about his experiences. He talked about his technical work developing an intraocular lens for blind cataract patients in the developing world, and his subsequent realization of the importance of distribution networks and other business logistics. After getting an MBA from Harvard and a brief stint at McKinsey, he again got involved in public health in the developing world by helping design better packaging for an anti-malarial drug that would better enable people in Tanzania to self-administer it, and is currently working on something similar for a self-administered HIV test. He impressed on the audience that small fixes, like making medical directions easier to understand, could have huge impacts on the developing world.
