Even if you're just learning the ropes in kite-flying, going to a festival might be a great way to connect to other kite-flyers and to see beautiful kites from around the world. Your own kite flying skills may improve just by watching the best of the best in competitions or demonstrations. Maybe one day, you might consider entering a competition for fun or with the intent of winning.
International Festivals- The Washington State International Kite Festival presented by The World Kite Museum is a weeklong kite celebration and competition held annually during the third week of August. It boasts that it is the biggest and best kite festival in North America.
- The Bristol International Festival of Kites & Air Creations takes place late August or early September and has been going on for 22 years. The festival includes demonstrations, displays of kites people have been working on year long and of course, competitions.
- The Niagara International Kite Festival takes place over four days in early October. The festival includes demonstrations of kite-related sports, exhibitions and due to its unique location, a kite arch that connect the U.S. side to the Canada side. There is also a historical reenactment of the first kite to cross the gorge.
- The Adelaide International Kite Festival is a relatively new festival at 12 years old, but has grown to be the largest in the southern hemisphere.
For those who don't live near these kite festivals and aren't extremely invested in kite-flying, it would be practical to go to a local festival. The American Kiteflier's Association has a great calendar with smaller, local events. |
