- 7/20 - Anchor Brewing Company Tour & Tasting

Friday, July 20 12:45 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
(with optional post-tour pub or pizza stop)
Anchor Brewing Company
1705 Mariposa Street
San Francisco

Cost: $10

Did you know:
  • Anchor Brewing Company owes its very existence to a Stanford Alumnus?
  • Anchor is revered as the birthplace of the microbrew revolution in America…despite being originally founded in 1896?
  • Anchor Brewing’s savior (in 1965) was awarded a James Beard Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008?
  • Anchor makes eight distinguished beers right here in San Francisco? It’s not just the delicious Anchor Steam!
  • A world-class bleu cheese, a famous appliance brand and Anchor Brewing are all intimately related?
  • Fritz Maytag (B.A. ’59), great-grandson of the washing machine guru, is the former owner and brewmaster at Anchor Brewing and also has run Maytag Dairy Farms since the 1960’s?

All this will be confirmed when we tour the historic Anchor Brewery!

The walking tour of the brewery lasts about an hour. The tour guide will give you a brief history of the brewery and walk you through three floors of the building where beers are brewed in small batches using old world techniques. A beer tasting, available only to people who take the tour, is provided after the tour. In all, the tour and tasting takes about 2 hours.

We will meet at the brewery, take the tour and do the tasting. Afterward, the Stanford group can continue the tasting concept at a local pub or pizza stop, each on our own nickel.

NOTE: Space on this tour is extremely limited, so register NOW to claim your spot!

- 7/26 - Classic Cocktails Class with SF Mixology

Thursday, July 26, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.
Updated venue! Raven Bar
1151 Folsom Street
San Francisco, CA 94103

Price: $75 per person

Capacity: 25 people

What does the word mixology mean? To some it’s a word that is symbolic of an era – not of old – but one that is vibrant and new. It is a resurgent cocktail movement that embodies an art form that was lost during the roaring 20s, where a country angry with alcohol, was no longer tolerant of its potency. In this class explore the new renaissance of classic cocktails, tasting the bittered slings of the early 1800s, the original martinis of pre-prohibition America, and the revival of fresh ingredients in the tiki movement of the mid-20th century. This 2 hour course will teach you the history of the modern American cocktail. Taste why gin died after prohibition. Learn how a 90 year old law still affects our palates today. You’re going to gain a new love for the classics and understand what the word mixology means to you. Hosted by SF Mixology.
