On the 31st January St. Andrews Church was chosen to host the Chevin civic sermon.  On 20th June 1589, in his will, Mr Richard Chevin left a substantial property to the Cambridge City Council on condition the Mayor chose a church within the city in which to hold the Chevin Sermon each year on the first Sunday before Candlemas.  The council still maintain this tradition even though the money has come to an end.
The following text was taken from the Cambridge Evening News - Cambridge's mayor led his collegues down memory lane for the Chevin civic service.
As the setting for the annual event, cllr Russ McPhereson picked St. Andrew's Church in Cherry Hinton, which is 200 yards from his home and is also where he married his wife Carole in 1978.
He led a procession into the church and gave readings to a 100-strong congregation, while the vicar, Rev Barry Linney, gave a sermon.
