This was the 40th anniversary of the twinning link.
It was also the year when the Channel Tunnel was completed and opened.
Armentières held an English week. Local shops dressed their windows with an English theme. The town held a competition in which local schoolchildren had to design a poster to mark Anglo-French friendship and the opening of the Channel Tunnel.
