Stalybridge-Armentières

Armentières

Armentières is a town of just over 25,000 inhabitants, in the North East of France, 60 miles from Calais, about 9 miles from the city of Lille and under one mile from the Belgian border. The town of Ypres is about 10 miles away.

In contrast to the landscape around Stalybridge, the surrounding countryside is mainly very flat. Runners and cyclists from Armentières are presented with a challenge when they visit Stalybridge!

Armentières has a residential street called Avenue de Stalybridge. In 2005, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the twinning link, a direction sign pointing to Stalybridge (650 km) was installed in the Place du Général de Gaulle in the town centre, just in front of the Town Hall. The same sign indicates Armentières' German twin town of Osterode am Harz (690 km).

Armentières Town Hall contains three beautiful stained glass windows, which represent spinning, weaving and brewing, thus recalling the town's industrial history.

In November 2008, a statue of Mademoiselle from Armentières, made famous by the marching song of the same name, was placed in the centre of a roundabout in Avenue Léo Lagrange (see slide show of Armentières Town Centre, top right).
