Catalog Course Description

DRAMA-112 Stage Makeup

2 Units

SC

May Be Repeated Once

1 hour Lecture / 3 hours Laboratory per Week

This course studies the aesthetics, materials and procedures of stage makeup involving: latex and derma wax for witches and fairies, corrective and aging techniques, the creation of animals and monsters, and the construction of beards and moustaches. CAN DRAM 14, CSU, UC

Class Time & Place: Tuesday & Thursday 9:30 am-10:45 am in the PAC-3 (Makeup Room), plus 18 hours TBA lab during the semester, which may be done either as one hour a week during 11-7 Tu or Th, or in larger blocks working as makeup crew members for Urinetown or A View from the Bridge during dress rehearsals and performances.

Web site: Class Web Page: http://sites.google.com/site/stagemakeupclass/.   Photos that we take of you in class may be posted there, where you can download or print out the images.  Let me know if you do NOT want photos of you or your work put online.  A copy of this syllabus will also be online there, along with links to additional material. You can also post your own photos, make your class portfolio page there, and add links you want to share with your fellow students.

Student Learning Outcomes:  To learn basic make-up techniques for use in the theatre, including old age, beards, etc. To learn to love and accept your face and better manipulate what it can do on stage.

Materials:  Theatrical make-up kit; hand towel; cold cream, baby oil, or makeup remover; bar of soap; tackle box or other container; pencil sharpener, colored pencils for renderings.

If you already have bought a full size student theatrical makeup kit similar to the ones at the bookstore feel free to use it, the choice of brand is immaterial to this class.  Every major theatrical makeup company (Ben Nye, Kryolan, Graftobian, Bob Kelly, Grimas) makes excellent student makeup kits.

Recommended Texts: DVC DRAMA SEASON TICKET 09-10, Richard Corson Stage Makeup (10th Edition), Irene Corey, The Mask Of Reality.

Instructional methods: Because this class is larger than the makeup classroom can fit, the class will be divided into two groups staggered to rotate in the class space for much of the semester.  Students in each group will begin by viewing a video demo in the men’s dressing room next door, where my virtual self will show you how to do a style of theatrical makeup.  At the next class meeting you will spend time in the makeup room working on your own face (or that of a volunteer you bring to class) and getting help from the real “live” me in how to do the assigned makeup.  Other classes are done in a single large group where indicated in the calendar.

Videos: If you miss a video demo, please hasten to see it before you get behind. Tara has extra disks of some videos in the costume studio.  You can also purchase your own copies of the Theatrical Makeup Design Interactive video demonstrations we show in class at TheatricalDesign.com.  The DVC library has also ordered a copy.

Students who wear Glasses:  Some students who wear glasses (other than reading glasses) may find the mirrors in our makeup room are set at the wrong distance for their best vision.  Other students also sometimes find this to be true.  If you wear glasses, or are having trouble with our mirrors, please go to your local drugstore and purchase a standing magnifying mirror with built in light. You will not regret doing so.

Students with Beards and/or skin problems:  If at any time, for any reason, you want to avoid doing the assigned makeup on your own face, you may bring in a volunteer whom you have recruited for the purpose.  Some students have elected to do this for a full semester with one volunteer, or intermittently with several.  If you already have a beard you will need to plan on finding a volunteer on which to apply a beard for your group’s Beard Makeup Day.

Grading: Grading is based on a system of points given for successful completion of assignments and successful completion of the 18 lab hours outside of class.  The regular assignments are completed in class and are due on the dates stated.  Therefore attendance is a "must." There are up to 500 points obtainable in the regular assignments. Students with valid medical excuses for absence can take alternative assignments at the discretion of the instructor. Makeup may be done on one’s own face or that of a volunteer provided by the student. Grading is based on the following table:

                 500-450 pts= A       This comes out to: 100-90%

                 449-400pts= B                             89-80%

                 399-350 pts= C                            79-70%

                 349-300 pts= D                            69-60%

                 299-0 pts= F                                 59-0%

Evaluation: Project assignments will be graded based on

25% Completion (Is the project really done, or have important steps been left unfinished?)

25% Neatness, accuracy, clarity (How much have your drawing/makeup skills improved?)

25% Creativity (Are the choices you have made in design or application boring and ill thought out or interesting and clever?)

25% Practicality (Would the project actually be usable in a show on stage?)

Definitions:

·         Rendering- drawing of a design which one intends to execute.

·         Makeup rendering- drawing of a makeup design one intends to execute

·         Morgue- an organized file of clippings.

·         Makeup Morgue- an organized collection of clippings, pictures and old renderings to aid in inspiration for makeup design.

Student Code of Conduct:  Learn your Mantra: “There is nothing wrong with my face.” While a makeup class is an appropriate place to discuss age, race, disease, genetics, smoking, drinking, gender, acne, tattoos, body issues and lots of other hot button topics that relate to the human face, that is not a license to give anyone a hard time about any of these issues.  Please treat this class as a supportive therapy group that can help you learn to accept, and revel in, your face.  Help your classmates do the same.

Assignment Explanations:

Famous Guys in Beards. Do a makeup design based on a well known image of a guy in a beard. The best folks to pick are historical and newsworthy ones where you can get lots of images like Lenin, Darwin, Charles I, Frederick Douglas, Emperor Meiji, Dickens, Che Guevara, King Faisal, etc. or Osama Bin Laden, the Unibomber, members of ZZ Top, Steve Jobs & Steve Wozniak.  BRING IN A PHOTO OF THE PERSON YOU ARE DOING PLUS A RENDERING OF WHAT YOU PLAN TO DO.

Drag: Do a Makeup Design based on Drag Queen research images to make a Hyper feminine comedy glamour. BRING IN A PHOTO OF RESEARCH MATERIAL THAT INSPIRED YOUR DESIGN PLUS A RENDERING OF WHAT YOU PLAN TO DO.

Kabuki/Chinese Opera/ Native Mask: find a non-naturalistic face design from a non-western theatrical tradition, including, but not limited to Alaska Native masks, African ritual makeup, Balinese dance drama, Chinese Opera, Maori Tattoos, Kabuki Kumidori , etc.  Make copies of your source material.  Draw a makeup rendering that adapts the design to fit your face using 2-D makeup without prosthetics.  BRING IN A PHOTO OF RESEARCH MATERIAL THAT INSPIRED YOUR DESIGN PLUS A RENDERING OF WHAT YOU PLAN TO DO.

Animal: Research an animal face, gather together source material and print it out.  Adapt the animal face into a stylized simplified makeup design for your face.  IN A PHOTO OF RESEARCH MATERIAL THAT INSPIRED YOUR DESIGN PLUS A RENDERING OF WHAT YOU PLAN TO DO.

Zombie DVC:  Bring your kits to the cafeteria and turn each other and willing volunteers into zombies, ghouls, vampires, etc to take over the campus with the undead.

Explanation: Final Projects: design and execute a complex design of your choosing on a student partner of your choosing who will reciprocate.  The goal here is to wow your fellow students.  Do your design on the other student’s outline sheet in advance and bring it in on the day you arrange to do the makeup.

Final Exam Period:  Dec 17 8am-10am Final makeup morgue due [20] Final online portfolio page due [30] Bring in time sheet documenting your total of 18 out of class lab hours [60].

Shows: All students enrolled in a theatre class are incouraged to either participate in, or view our shows.  If there is a production you are not actively participating in as crew member or cast, you should go see the show.  The Thursday before the Friday opening of each show is a discounted student preview.
