Welcome to the student website of the Society for a Science of Clinical Psychology (SSCP)! We would like to tell you about the great benefits for student members of SSCP. The student listserv is the main link between students and most SSCP information, initiatives, and resources. In fact, one of the main initiatives we have recently worked on is making the student listserv a more active and useful resource to students and we’ve based many changes on feedback we’ve received from student members. One major change is that we have created a “Listserv facilitator” position – graduate student Evan Kleiman currently holds this role and helps with some of the following listserv tasks, which we view as great benefits to student members:- Posting announcements for student funding opportunities (within and outside of SSCP)
- Posting information and announcements about research assistantships, post-doc opportunities, and faculty positions
- Facilitating discussion among students on relevant topics such as internship, “surviving in graduate school,” etc.
- Organizing panels of faculty/professionals to engage in a Q&A-type discussion with students on topics of interest. The past listserv facilitator collected questions from students on the topic of post-docs and Drs. Richard McNally and Jonathan Comer submitted replies, which were then posted on the listserv. A future topic for a similar Q&A might relate to work/life balance.
- Bringing topics from the main SSCP listserv (or field in general) to the student listserv to facilitate discussion
In addition to the student listserv benefits, being a student member opens you up to the following benefits:- Opportunity to become more involved with SSCP in several student leadership roles: student representative to the board, listerv manager, website manager, and listserv facilitator
- Eligibility to apply for an SSCP Dissertation Grant Award and a Student Poster Award at the annual APS convention (over $2,500 in student awards are disbursed each year).
- Access to the SSCP Clinical Psychology Internship Directory, a guide to science-based training and clinical research experiences offered by internship programs that is not available from any other resource. The Directory allows students and faculty to obtain detailed information on training resources, opportunities to receive training in empirically supported treatments, and clinical research opportunities.
- Opportunity to join and participate in SSCPnet, a forum for wide-ranging conversation on issues related to research, training, and advocacy in psychological clinical science.
- Receive our seasonal e-newsletter, Clinical Science.
- Invitation to attend the SSCP Board meetings (which take place annually at APA and/or APS), where student input is well-received.
We have also recently created an internship committee to take a closer look at the current state of the internship process and solicit input/ideas from students, faculty, interns, and internship directors through a survey, which we recently updated and re-launched. Also in the works is a mentorship program, through which students would be able to connect with clinical psychology professionals who represent a range of career paths. We feel that this is an excellent time to join SSCP as a student, as we are actively working on making SSCP a greater resource and organization for students, and we very much welcome feedback, input, and involvement. Many of the above-described initiatives have been developed very recently, and our goal is to continue to increase student activity and involvement.Graduate or undergraduate students with a keen interest in the practice and advancement of science in clinical psychology are invited to join SSCP as Student Members. Membership costs only $10 per year -- or as low as $7.50 per year if you apply as a group of at least 5 students and get your DCT to sign off. Please don’t hesitate to ask any questions or provide us with any feedback or suggestions on what might be more helpful to you. We appreciate your membership! |

2011 Year-in-Review from Student Reps
Hello and Happy New Year! As a new semester starts, Becca and I wanted to send along a summary of the activities and initiatives we were engaged in this past year with the goal of serving SSCP student members. In addition, we wanted to take this opportunity to remind student members about the student listserv, which functions as a forum for students to discuss career, research, clinical, and policy issues. Only students have access to the listserv and it is intended to be a more relaxed and less formal atmosphere for discussion. If you are a student member and have yet to join the student listserv: Please send a request to Phil Masson to join. Also, we invite you to ...

Getting to Know Kristy Benoit (SSCP Student Listserv Facilitator)
SSCP students welcome Kristy Benoit, SSCP's first appointed Student Listserv Facilitator. Kristy writes: "I'm a fourth year clinical psychology student at Virginia Tech where I
work with Dr. Tom Ollendick. I'm broadly interested in childhood anxiety
disorders, with more specific interests lying in the areas of the
intergenerational transmission of anxiety, parental beliefs and
behaviors, information processing biases, and interpersonal factors.
"As the new SSCP student listserv facilitator, I look forward to making
our listserv a more active and helpful resource for students. My goal is
make it a place where students can find pertinent information,

Student RepresentativesSara StasikSara is a fourth-year clinical psychology graduate student, currently at the University of Notre Dame after completing the first part of her graduate education at the University of Iowa. Her interests are broadly related to the assessment, classification, and diagnosis of mood and anxiety disorders. More specifically, she is interested in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and its classification, as well as relations between OCD symptoms, Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum Disorders, and related phenomena. One of her current projects is looking at a more comprehensive assessment of OCD and the differential relations between specific OCD symptom dimensions and other psychopathology. Sara is also interested in how individual differences variables, such as personality, culture, etc., affect etiology, symptom presentation, and treatment response. She recently contributed to a project that looked at the effectiveness and efficacy of a home-based depression treatment for low-income ethnic minority women. Sara is looking very forward to contributing to the SSCP community as one of the SSCP student representatives. Contact Sara at sstasik@nd.eduKristy Benoit
Kristy is a fifth year clinical psychology doctorate
candidate at Virginia Tech. She is broadly interested in the etiology,
assessment, and treatment of childhood anxiety disorders. More specifically,
she is interested in the role that information processing biases may play in
the onset of these disorders and how cognitive bias modification paradigms
might be used to effectively prevent and treat them. She is also interested in
the interplay between child and parent variables (e.g., temperament, attachment,
parental psychopathology, and parenting behaviors) that may serve as risk or
protective factors for child anxiety. For her dissertation, Kristy is
investigating the feasibility of a unique interpretation bias modification
paradigm in which anxious mothers are trained to interpret ambiguity in their child's
environment in a benign manner, with the ultimate goal of using such paradigms
to prevent the intergenerational transmission of anxiety. Kristy is excited
about her role as a SSCP student representative and looks forward to serving
the SSCP community.
